Tubes have a shelf life.....sometimes you get duds...its the nature of the beast.

Id tell new owner to check bias of amp....and then go from there. You did nothing wrong..... but, youre the one who has to sleep at night. I see no issues here.

I'd politely tell him to get fucked.

sucks bc reverb and ebay side with noobs who don't know anything and always want something for free but if he said the amp sounded good that should be a done deal at that point.

when i buy a used tube amp i pretty much always plan to change the tubes....as should the buyer here. broken tubes in transit may be one thing, but glowing too hot??

This 100%. I never expect tubes from an used Amp to last long, even if the ad says "New Tubes put in last... month". If they do last then it's just icing on the cake. It's one of those "wear and tear" kinda things, wouldn't expect tires on a used car to be reliable either.

Is this the guys first tube amp? Maybe he doesn't have a clue.

I would tell him they are tubes and are expected to fail. If he becomes a dick about it i would not risk a bad review and just tell him you will split the cost of the tubes with him.

Yea, a bad review sucks but having him request a refund through Reverb or forcing the Paypal hand might really hurt.

Tell him the amp was fully checked out including the tubes by a tech before you shipped it. There is no in between. If there was an issue a tube would have blown.

This is how I look at it as well. Maybe it was his first tube amp idk? If the tubes all work when I get the amp it's a good bonus and yes it sucks having to buy new tubes for an amp you just bought. I've experienced both as a buyer but idk it's your call.

You could explain that to him and offer to split a quad like mentioned.

Being a seller puts you at a disadvantage for sure. I'd also add that if he is a noob you probably don't want that amp back. Not saying he did something wrong but you never know.

Used tubes have no warranty...period. Sounds to me like he's just trying to scam you out of a new set of tubes.

Tubes are a tough thing. They can be finicky by nature, and shipping them does nothing to help that.

Short of a shattered tube, you'll get no help from the shipping insurance. It's just the nature of shipping amps. Like someone else said, I always figure I'll have to replace tubes on a used amp I buy anyway.

You think he'd be offended if you asked him to search his vagina for answers?

I had an issue like this with an eBay buyer about 3 yrs ago. It was just a little Kustom tube amp that I sold and after the new owner gave me positive feedback he opened a case on me saying the amp was faulty and having volume issues cutting in and out. I told him I`d send him 2 new EL84s as there was a good chance that was the problem but nope he was confident that wasn`t the problem and he wanted a refund and explaing my side of the story to an eBay rep was complete joke , they didn`t have a clue about power tubes in amps . Anyways i had to refund the guy and when I got the amp back the amp did indeed have problems with the volume cutting in and out , I put 2 new EL84s and problem solved . That was the last time I sold an amp on eBay. Sorry to make it all about me OP , good luck

Rules according to PayPal is the seller is screwed
This sucks

  I'm with everybody else. Like a previous post, when you buy a used car change the fluids, check the brakes etc. Tubes are regular maintenance.

Yep!
Tell him The tubes and amp were tested and everything was A-OK!
What an age we live in - where the buyer has so much control!
It's so sad... :gethim:

Ps- I totally agree with Vultures, I ALWAYS replace tubes when I buy a used amp... and many/most times even a new amp!

-RULES!!!.. we don't need no stinking rules!!

-like other's have said, pay pal, reverb,eBay, basically any on line classified section all fall in line with the buyer,.. The seller gets zero protection, and buyer's have been taking advantage of this scam for year's-

Close your PayPal account or remove bank information or kill your bank account.
Tell buyer to get fucked.

tell him to send the old tubes back to you.

you will check em and send him another set of working tubes
