When you're great, you're great on almost any gear. I just want to be average on great gear!

Just shows that it's the player, not the gear. Gear is awesome but if you suck, nice gear won't save you.

I've seen this all over facebook and while yes the playing is beyond awesome would anyone really be happy having that as their tone??

A 12 yr old beginner kid would forsure. That set up isn't meant for an experienced player, it's a beginner set up and I am sure many of us had worse sounding set ups when we were 12-13 years old.

Yes, Kirk Hammett has been happy with that tone for years

I enjoyed that much more than when he uses his gear!

I really can't stand whammy bar antics any more. Well, not for like the last 25 years or so. ;)

Hahahah well done. But Hetfield's rhythm tone makes up for it.

 :emofag: :grim:

little late :Uploaded on Jul 1, 2007 ;)

This just proves the majority of a guitarists sound, style and tone come from the guitarist themselves, not the gear that they use ;)

Now you tell me

And on the neck pickup to boot. Impressive, makes me want to go practice, so see you all later.

I posted that last year. Killer. Goes to show when it all comes down, when u have the chops nothing else really matters.

  I love at the end when he says it was painful on that guitar.

He is just the man, always was. :worship:

Yep, if I played like him!!!

He'll always be the king in my eyes. I don't gush over the virtuosos and honestly most bore me, but Satriani just freakin rocks and his playing is so tasteful and groovy. He crafts actual songs rather than mindless wanking. And seeing him on pedestrian gear in a casual setting, man, that's just inspiring.

Nice to see this video respected for what it is by players- that's one of the reasons I love this forum. =)

As someone said above, this video has been making the rounds on FB recently (I think on "Forgotten Guitar" page) and I couldn't believe the idiotic comments by the boutique-only-buying, blooz-lawyer, anything-80s-related-played-with-skill-sucks crowd. Shit like:
"Anyone can do that with that much gain."
"Why do you mean tone is in the fingers? He's got a wah and distortion on there."

C'mon! It's a master of the instrument who has his own signature gear still sounding and playing like a boss on entry-level gear.
Satch rocks!

Tone is in the fingers.....

The only tone in anyone's fingers is if they're snapping their fingers, clapping their hands, using their fingers to whistle or making hand farts.

IF tone were in the fingers (A horribly ignorant and entirely inaccurate statement), players would mic their air guitars.

I find it interesting that so many still confuse discussing 'tone' w/ style, touch or technique.

The tone is in the instrument, and it's the player's job to coax it out, assuming the potential is in there in the 1st place (On the player's part, as well as the instrument).
