After years of wanting to see these guys in concert, I finally went this past weekend at the Electric Factory in Philly. I showed up halfway through the 2nd opener and the place was packed. I’ve never seen it that packed.
I’ll keep this review short… the band sounded amazing. Scott Phillips is a solid in the pocket drummer that tons of great fills. He is probably up there as one of my favorite rock drummers(Portnoy being my fav). Tremonti was solid… I didn’t get to look at his rig closely, but he had Mesa Cabs and a few heads… one of which was a Bogner of some kind. He and Myles played PRS guitars all night. As for Myles, what a great singer!!! When singing with Slash, his voice can get somewhat nasally, but with AB, he sounds fantastic. His sense of pitch and vocal stamina are incredible.
As I mentioned earlier, the band sounded amazing. They were solid solid solid. BUT I got bored after a while. Thank god for the light show because they have to be one of the most boring bands I’ve ever seen live. It was almost like watching a Dream Theater concert. Again, all solid players, but there wasn’t much soul with the performance. Myles spoke to the audience maybe two or three times. His banter is pretty good though. Wasn’t political or spoke about world issues… he actually made a joke about how he wouldn’t be watching the super bowl(which was the following night) because he is completely sports illiterate and would be watching the “Property Brothers marathon on HGTV”.
For me, he was the most impressive part of the band… great voice and awesome guitar chops. I actually like his lead playing a lot more than Tremoniti. Just has more soul and a better sense of melody.
All in all, great rock show for sure… but I had just as much enjoyment(if not more) than watching Lady Gaga during halftime at the Super Bowl… but that’s another thread altogether.
