Saw Dream Theater on Saturday

Over the weekend, me and a few buddies went downtown to check out Dream Theater at the Chicago Theater. This was actually the 10th time that I have seen them play, and I was completely blown away this time around how good of a show it was. Set was tight, production was great (usually DT production is nothing to ride home about), and Labrie never sounded that good live. To me, its amazing how a band at this stage in their career just seems to be getting better. And Mangini tore it up.

On a side note, we actually went to Petrucci's clinic on the north side earlier that day. Really cool experience to have him show you some tips, answer some questions, take pictures and sign some autographs. Met him a few times and he is always such a nice/down to earth guy. Overall, great day, just figured I would share.

Cool! I really enjoyed the show when they came to Montreal a few weeks ago.
I fully agree with your review, they are great live!

Saw them last night I'm MKE. It really was a great show. They're so tight it's pretty ridiculous. Mangini seems to fit in really well and appeared to really be enjoying himself. I also agree that LaBrie's vocals were very good. Minor gripe... I love the older stuff, but you can only fit so much in 3 hours.

Would like to see them again, but it looks like they've ignored the southern USA this tour. Meh...

I think the idea is it can at least somewhat detour the muscle from getting really tight due to the cold. You cant force your way through it once it happens. Better to stop it ahead of time than try to deal with it in the middle of a show

I saw them in NJ on the 31st, got front row on Petrucci's side a week and a half before the show. AMAZING SHOW I've seen them a few times before but never An Evening with I've always been a fan of John's playing and to stand that close and watch him play for 3hrs was inspiring to say the least.

A couple of pics from the show

Even got a pick for the collection not one of his JazzIII's but the printed up ones for tossing out. Though he handed me it.

And I have to say as much as I didnt like the Majesty when they 1st showed pics of it seeing it in person I actually dig it.

I have a ton more pics and a couple of short videos If anyone wants any more.

That is kind of a loaded question. DT has done a pretty good job of staying true to their roots. With that being said, each album really kind of has it's own thing going on. Some will like one variation and others another.

IMHO - Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory is one of my all time favorites from the older material. It tells a story from the beginning to the end. Kind of like Operation Mindcrime.

Train of Thought is probably my favorite heavy DT record.

Awake and metropolis and then the formula got a little tired for me.

Scenes from a Memory is in my option their best (and seems to have a cult following on that one). Train of Thought, Octavarium and A Dramatic Turn of Events are also at the top of my list.

AWAKE, without a doubt, especially for me...then Systematic Chaos and, and...but I just love that band... almost 18 years.

Nice pics Rich. I like yourself didn't like the Majesty when it was first leaked. I'm really considering ordering one in blue.

Saw them in NYC on 3/28. I thought they were great as usual and Labrie was very good too. I think this was the 8th time I've seen them. Production has always been good on the "Evening with" shows. I thought the guitar tone was really, really mid heavy at the beginning of the show and either it got better as the show went on or my ears got used to it. It amazes me how accurate JP can be during a 3 hour show considering how technically demanding the material is. I honestly don't think I heard him miss one note.

As for the guitar, I think it's kind of gawdy. I stopped playing signature guitars a few years ago ( I had 3 EBMM JPs ). I'd certainly never buy one of the Majesty models as IMO, it's way more than a signature guitar due to it's shape, faux carbon fiber, etc. But I'm sure it's a fine instrument. The previous JPs were beautiful guitars that I could see other artists using because of what they offered but this guitar to me, is as much a set-piece on the stage as it is his instrument. Kind of like Gene Simmon's Axe-shaped bass. I think only extreme JP fans will buy them. But we will see.

Thanks. I honestly think a lot of it was due to how sterling acted also about it. But yea once I saw some pics from namm I was kinda diggin it, I really like the White and the Red, I was kinda hoping he'd break out a blue for a song but it didn't happen.

Here's the rest of the pics if anyone wants to take a look.
