I've been working with some guys lately with Rev 2s and have been really digging them, so I traded some gear that was just sitting around for this beast. Just came in tonight. I can't crank it till tomorrow but even at low volume it sounds great, real dark and throaty, which is what I wanted. Question I heard a clip of this dude who did a KT88 mod on his and the clip sounds just brutal does anyone know about this? Is it cool? Differences?

I REALLY want to try one of these, have never had the chance to play a Bogner yet, but want to REAL bad.

congrats man. those are killer amps for sure. i really like my buddies with the kt77's in it.

it's a really easy mod for the KT88. All that is involved, is piggybacking the bias resistor for more current. I emailed Bogner a while back, and they said the transformer could take it no problem. You do however have to account for the size of the specific KT88 you want. I'm not sure on the layout with the Rev 2, but the blue had the transformer VERY close to the tubes, so you have a clearance issue there if the tube is fat. I tried some KT88/6550 in the Uber and the XTC, and it was pretty cool in both amps. Tightened them up a bit, extended the highs/lows, does what you would expect with the added headroom. The grind is different though, and the feel gets a little stiffer. If you didn't like the TJ, you may not dig KT88's in the rev 2. Although it's not the same animal, it's definitely ballpark IMO.

Thanks man, maybe I'll stay where it's at for now.

Nice James

I've had two rev blues and regret moving both of them. I've never played a rev 2, wonder how much of a difference there is between the 2.

JJ E34L's. I really like them a lot more than regular JJ's or even Winged C's. The JJ's have a overbearing bottom end and the Winged C's top end is a bit harsh. Somehow the E34L's are just right. I also have tried Winged C 6550s and Sovtek KT88's in there. I like them both, definitely a different feel and flavor. A lot tighter. However, I miss the rich midrange of the E34L's though when I use them. All Chinese 9th B in the preamp section except V4, which has a JJ ECC 83s.

What are you using?

Hi James. When I first got mine it was modded for KT88's I really liked it at first but it seemed to be a bit too glassy sounding after time. I went back to EL34's (and eventually just sent it to Mike Fortin and had him re-build it). 34's help keep the low end a bit tighter in those amps. Power tube wise, stay with SED or Ruby BHT's due to the high plate voltages in those amps.

Thanks Laura. I was gonna hit you up this week about some tubes for it. I found some clips that I love from a guy and he sent me this last night:

I'm using a mullard RI in V1, Chinese for the Loop, Tung Sol for the Clean and JJ for the other slots (to add some warmth).
I defintely prefer KT88 (=C=) for the poweramp, you'll just have to piggy back the bias R to get the bias in the right range

I've heard to stick to the EL34 or E34Ls and some guys like the KT88s. I guess there's no way to know till you here it, it looks like it came with JJ EL34s, I will fire it up today and check it out, the dude I got it from said he thought the tubes were pretty old.

I had a Rev Blue that was absolutely killer. I can't recall off hand what tubes the previous owner hand selected, but whatever he had done was wicked! Congrats on the Uber, James!

Try some slide work with it sometime. You'll be pleasantly surprised. So smooth!

I just cranked it, took me about 3 minutes to dial in a sound. Sounds killer. Definitely and amp that needs to be cranked super loud to really open up.

You probably already know this, but if not...The presence and mid controls are key with that amp. If you like a scooped tone, dial the presence down rather than the mids. Then use the mids & treble to compensate. Also, dialing the presence up to 1:30 and beyond tightens the sound & seems to add a slight amount of gain. It's almost as if the presence acts more like a mid control in many ways.

Of course it depends on what guitar, pickups, speakers, etc, but a good starting point for I found for my Rev.2 was:
bass- 10:30
mids- 2:00
treble-1:30
presence- 2:00
gain- 1:30
volume- 12:00
Master- as loud as you can take it

The above setting is not a scooped tone, but a good solid heavy tone with just enough cut and chunk.

As you mentioned getting the volume cranked really helps open it up. One cool thing to try is to crank the Master to 12:00 and use the individual channel volume to bring up the volume. You get a little more muscle from the power section at lower volumes.
