He should have kept taking the Satriani lessons, once he stopped those it went down hill...

I'm going to be the contrarian here. Yes, he put together some solos early on that fit the music, much like King/Hanneman did. It doesn't mean that they were great solos though, or that he was a great player. There were so many better guitar players out there that if you plugged them into those songs would have done as well if not better. Skolnick example number one, even at 18. He was/is an average thrash guitar player that lucked into a band that was in the right place at the right time that toured relentlessly and built something up.

Yes, I wish that I had his money and fame.

Kirk is a better guitarist than Lars is a drummer...

... that's not saying much.

hmmm that's a tough one! To be honest, as a drummer as well (although I suck), Lars actually put on some very solid performances in the early work. In fact, he has a signature style or way of dropping in accents that really fit the music. He HAD some pretty cool drum patterns as well. You really can't fault him on his drumming on MOP and AJFA. There is some great stuff there. Now however, total poppy cock. He is sloppy, lazy, and lacks stamina. Age is also no excuse because you look at Dave Lombardo or Nicko McBrain and you see there is no excuse for mediocrity.

Some of the early stuff was good. The main thing that annoys me about him is that all he has to do is play guitar. That’s it. All day. For over 30 years now. Given all that, he’s gone backwards instead of forwards. He could woodshed for hours, take lessons, enroll in courses, whatever...he’s got the time. Guess he’s too busy surfing, getting high, sipping fine wine...I dunno.
Dont forget collecting horror memorabilia! Some of his stuff is friggin awesome!!

I will say Hammett was incredible up through the Black Album. Come on, his solo on The Unforgiven is not to be fucked with. THAT BEING SAID, he's gone way downhill in the past 15 years or so. It's obvious he puts in the bare minimum to squeak by, relying on improvising and wah for all of his new solos instead of really hammering shit down like he used to. His solos on Death Magnetic and Hardwired feel like they're there only to take up space, as opposed to being a part of the song. I mean, check out the solo he did on Exodus' "Salt the Wound". It's among the best solos he's done in a long time, yet it still falls short when directly juxtaposed with Gary Holt's solo, and it's not even like Holt is some Friedman or Skolnick-esque wizard (not talking shit, Exodus is my favorite band!).

I will never, ever, deny Hammett's early shit. Solos like Fade to Black, One, The Shortest Straw, Master of Puppets, etc. are ICONIC, and incredible. He just doesn't have it anymore, and he doesn't even seem particularly interested in getting it back.

Anyone that says Kirk can't play needs to re-listen to Dyers Eve! That solo is killer and you can hear the Satriani influences near the end of that solo. Probably his finest work.

Nobody is saying he couldn’t play. At issue is his suckhole vibrato which has only gotten worse over the years. And keep in mind, Dyers Eve is 30 years old. In my personal estimation, everything after that has been a giant suckfest.

Maybe the thread needs to be Schenker laughs at Hamlets vibrato or lack thereof lol

give him credit for his success, with that said he has lost material on his personal device that affected the group, and I believe it caused him to literally lift solos lines off of kill em all on that latest effort which was a good release, so good you could ignore the lame non creative solos on it. Maybe he needs to shut his flap on politics and other stuff and start practicing again. Is the hungriness there anymore?

Or he can be rockstar and do whatever he wants, its his life.
