Schmidt questions

Hi guys, I jost sold my Einstein :( It was a tough decision, but I couldn't use the amp in my current band, and I couldn't justify keeping it at home for whisper level noodling.

The band plays some modern indie rock, and I'm going for some Matchless/cranked Vox type of tones (think Stereophonics) and because I'm still a Diezel fan boy I'm trying to find out if I can get that from the Schmidt. I watched all the youtube clips I could find, but most of them are showing the (awesome) fluid lead channel or some plexi style riffing. I really DON'T want a "plexi" amp, so please don't tell me that the amp nails VH :D

The amp is really expensive, so please tell me if it will really meet my needs, or if I would just be better of with a Vox or a Matchless (both less expensive or at least readily available on the used market)
 
honestly, look elsewhere. go for exactly what you're looking for. get a vox or a matchless.
 
Thanks Joey, your advice makes a lot of sense. I'd still like to know how does the Schmidt do the modern Vox thing, can anybody compare it to a Matchless or a Bad Cat?
 
Well I've heard almost EVERY schmidt clip out there since I was VERY interested in it, and I played it at NAMM......now, remember this is NAMM so the environment isn't particularly suited to test an amp.

But from what I could sense it's still a Diezel....you "FEEL" the Diezelness......it's more crisp than the others but still has that darkish diezel vibe. The od channel is very Marshall like too. it's a fantastic amp but like I said..... if you're going after something and you have a strong amp as reference then why not get THAT amp..... specially since the amp you're asking about is more expensive than the one you have as reference.

I've been into Fenders FOR A LONG time and I've wanted to make my amps sound "Fendery" so, I went and got a Fender...best thing I did..... it's small Princeton Reverb RI combo and as soon as I can I'm getting a nice Bandmaster head or a Bassman...... it's the sound in my head so, WHY NOT PERSUE IT and stop dicking around :D
 
have you tried using the clean channel cranked for those Vox/Matchless tones?

i strongly feel that the Einstein is one of the simplest, whose versatility is where it's complexity is really hidden. add a compressor or a certain overdrive pedal and you're pushed in one tonal direction or another. My experience says stick to the clean channel, put a GOOD compressor out front and crank it; very brassy Hiwatt/"AC-XL" tone.

Also, your choice of guitar seems to pull you further away from an 'indie' type tone... Single coils all the way!

Really, i dont know what to say to people that 'cant find' a certain tone with a Diezel... it sucks that all Diezel demos online are of heavy Trucker-riffs and histrionic lead tones, but get past the preconception of a Diezel being able to only give you a heavy Marshall-flavor - their EQs are very simple but effective...use your ears!
 
Best Vox-ish sounding amp I ever played was a Savage. Glad 30 model I believe.
 
Thanks guys, I'm still not sure where I should go, as I said, I couldn't justify keeping the Einstein for the clean channel with pedals, the amp has other strenghts and somebody else should take advantage of them.
I'm still contemplating the Schmidt, I'm drawn to it because I know I'll get a fantastic and proffesional package, that will cover a lot of ground, event if it won't nail the Matchless/ Bad cat chimey and thick overdrive.
 
Here is the puzzla -- For that price can you get a 60's AC30? I love the Diezels Also --

Just know that Nothing sounds like an old AC30 not even new AC30's

watch it man..... getting an amp because "it sounds like it's a great deal/package" is not the way to go IMO..... unless you've played the amp a couple of times and know what you're getting yourself into.

You mentioned two "vintage vibe" amps as reference....the Schmidt is a fantastic amp..... I likedd it a lot, but its got a modern flavor to it, just so you know....... get it if you feel sure but watch it.....could end up on the used gear market shortly after the purchase.
 
Hi Journeyman! I am sure you will get the sound from the Stereophonics with the Diezel Schmidt and much more!!!
I have got the Schmidt and the 2x12 hemconebox since one year and its a great Amp!
I use channel 1 only for clean. Channel 2 is my main Channel for crunch and all others... use of course the volume on your guitar. And Ch.3 I play most of my solos!
You can change your tone so much only with the mid poti from vox style to marshall style!
Please order an and test it out.
The most of the shops will give you 30 days to return if it not suits!
Remember the Schmitd is a very high quality class A amp ( you can change easyly different tubes without doing more)
and its good for all styles and you need no distortion pedalls at all !
You have got 3 very useable channels a great reverb and a very good send return ajustable and all handling with
a 5 way board with mono connection.
What you want more?

Remember the old AC 30 will need a good tech and the matchless is expensive.
Also Peter Diezel does every modifies if you need any.
And of course good old German Handwork!

Hi,

I agree with part of it. But you have to test it! I know the Voxs and the Marshalls (can't speak for Matchless). The Schmidt is very good, but different! Maybe it suits to your taste - maybe not. Try to play somewhere (as Joey mentioned)!

Guys, thanks for all the input. Unfortunately I can't test the Schmidt, and the online demos haven't convinced me that it's what I'm looking for (they did convince me however that it's a gorgeous amp).
I just bought a Genz Benz Black Pearl, that looks like a very decent Matchless inspired amp, at only $750 used. Low risk investment, so to speak :) Let's see how it performs once I get it.
