Lots of good info in this thread so far.

I have owned 3 Splawn Nitros but have not had a chance to try a Quickrod. I am assuming from what I have read that I would dig the Quickrod but like the Nitro more considering what style of music I mostly play.

So as far as the Nitro goes. The first time around I owned one of the first ones made. I liked it but something seemed a bit off about it. It was loaded with KT77's which I now think is the worst choice for power tubes in the Nitro. I ended up selling it. I started to wonder if I was missing out on something by not trying the amp with Kt88's. Fast forward a couple years later which was a few months ago , I ended up buying another one, still an older model but this one had EL34's. I got the amp in and tried it out, sounded pretty good with the El34's but my main objective was to get some 88's in there.

I ended up doing the resistor swap so that the amp could take 88's. From the moment I hit the first note I knew this was what the Nitro should sound like. It really is pretty amazing with KT88's...... I was happy with this older model loaded with KT88's and then I started reading about how some things were changed on the newer 2009-2010 models.....So because I am a gear whore I ended up finding a good deal on a 2010 model and grabbed it. I compared both the older model and the newer one side by side, both having KT88's.

These are the differences: Obviously the loop volume control was added which most Nitro fans know about. Im not going to go to much in to detail about that except to say that it is a useful tool and pretty transparent. In general I find the loop to be pretty transparent on both models but the newer one may be even a bit more so.
I ended up speaking with Scott Splawn about what else was changed on the newer models and what he told me was that He designed the newer one to have a bit more upper midrange, he also changed the sweep and function of the depth control, the newer ones are also a bit quieter.

So comparing them side by side I did notice that the 2010 model had a bit more upper mid range, I could actually set everything at noon on the 2010 model and it sounded great that way where I would set the older one a bit different or not so typical. I would say the older model sounded just a bit thicker but not by much. Now the biggest change IMO is the Depth control , the depth control on the 2010 model does almost nothing at all. At first I thought there was something wrong with it, however when I spoke with Scott he told me it is very subtle on the newer models. The older ones depth control was pretty cool , I liked it more, you could dial in the amp darker and looser with it up all the way and brighter , tighter with it set very low.

This is becoming a pretty long post so to wrap this shit up I would say older or newer versions both kick ass for different reasons and I wouldnt mind having either one. I had to pick so I choose to sell the older one and keep the new one. Any which way you go the one thing I can say for sure is that the Nitro sounds best with KT88's.

This might be a dumb question but can you take a Nitro from kt88's to el34's. If so, any where online I can find out how?

Thanks guys

You'd probably have to change the bias resistor or something. Reach out to Scott Splawn and see what he says. He might tell you what needs to be done.

Two more questions:
1) If a quickrod has 4 preamp tubes, clean gain knob and loop volume it is latest revision?
2) is quickrod a better built and more organic JVM410H?

1) Yes
2) Yes. It's built like a brick shithouse. Not sure what you mean by 'organinc' though.

that's exactly what has to be done...because the tubes run at different amperage...I think the 34s run lower than the 88s and the pot that's in there for the 88s lowest threshold is way too high for the 34s
