Jim Marshall (the business man) put the JCM800 into production on Friday March 13th 1981 at precisely 09:37 AM in West London, England, UK.

You'd be much more satisfied with a 100 Watt KT66 driven 2466 as shown below:

Your post makes no sense whatsoever. If I'm happy with the amp as I'm using it, how could I have made not "a good pick"? Thanks for your concern for my amp happiness, I guess.

No sense whatsoever? Really? A 100w amp designed to sound it's best at volume levels that are beyond what any normal person would consider "reasonable" is not the best choice for rocking out by yourself at home. That makes "no sense whatsoever" to you? In this day and age there are literally HUNDREDS of better choices for that. The reason most of these modded amps are so popular is that people buy older Marshalls because they are cool and then realize that they are not made to do what they want them to do, which is play by themselves at home.

And I'm not bagging on rocking out at home--I play out once or twice a month and rock out at home every day. But my older Marshalls wait for the band.

Most folks definitely would--I agree.

With this post I'm done responding to you because you're reading comprehension and/or logical reasoning seems to be on a different plane from me. I have a 4010. That's a 50 watt amp: 2204 in a combo shell. My amp is stock and it does exactly what I want it to. Your post: bagging me for making a bad choice, makes no sense whatsoever because I'm happy with how the amp is performing exactly the way I'm using it. I own other amps, and yes there are hundreds to choose from, but I like the 2204/4010 exactly the way I'm using it and couldnt care less if it was "designed" for something else. I'm happy with it, and others in my situation may be too (gasp, people can have a different opinion from you). Bye.

Sorry I disagree. I had a VM and it was ok..but compared to the 2210 and 2204 I had at the time it wasn't even close. It was biased and I had new matched tubes in it. And I thought the loop sucked. It was gone in a week. If you are curious about an 800 just get one..you'll be able to sell it if it's not your thing. I will also say that who the hell cares if a guy wants to crank his Marshall or not? I do play with a drummer AND I also crank the amps I have every week at home when I'm alone..without a drummer...why? Cuz It's FUN!! :D

Easy fella   No one is "bagging on you"--as for my "reading comprehension", I simply asked why anyone that didn't play out would want to own a JCM800. I got several replies pretty much stating "because it's cool". And THAT is cool. I also put a big fat "IMO" in front of MY opinion that a JCM800 is not the best option for a home only player. On a thread where a guy is asking for opinions on the amp. If that bothers you...well...bye.

The JCM800 is a really cool looking iconic amp that has a mediocre master volume, no effects loop (or no decent effects loop if you consider the 2210), not enough gain for most modern rock and sounds best at high volume. If I was looking into these amps I would want to know these things, not just how great they are.

The truth is 20 watts is going to be very loud too. And, the fact that you can get a variety a great tones out of one at reasonable levels. There are many people that actually prefer higher wattage amps even though they play them at more reasonable levels. I've never played any amp 20 watts or over that better suited me for lower volume (I never play at TV levels anyway). Let's put it this way, they didn't sound better. Maybe one day I'll find one I dig, but right now with a TS, SD or clean boost, I can get a great tone for use at home or playing live.

I had a JCM 800 1959 model.
Basically a 4 input plexi amp with the 800 look...

I hear you 100%. Right now I'm digging my Mark V for low volume stuff but if you want the "vibe" of bigger tubes (which IMO is what kills the punch in most smaller amps--el84s don't do it for me personally) in a smaller package try out one of these guys--10w of el34 US made hand wired goodness:

http://www.cecamps.com/main/amplifiers/ ... e-express/

I've actually gigged with one and it responds much like my JMPs, but it does need some FOH to keep up fully with a full on rock band.

I've been jonesing for one of these for a couple of years now--just can't fully "justify" another old Marshall. But I do want one...hell that's justification enough I suppose...
