I'm thinking of picking up a Splawn QR and haven't had the chance to play through one one yet. I've heard sound clips and it seems like a good amp for 80's metal type stuff. Can it do modern, higher gain as well. I just wanted to get some opinions on the amp from those who've played it. What do you like or not like about it?

This is coming from someone who has never played a Splawn, but I think the QR's capabilities stop just short of modern metal. It can do modern hard rock though. 10 years got the core of their tone from that amp on their first album and it's pretty heavy at times. Just not modern brutal metal heavy by any means. I think the Nitro is aimed at the modern metal crowd though.

Can the Quickrod do early Metallica or Megadeth type tones?? Or does it need a boost?

Again, I've never played one, but I can say with certainty that it can do those sounds easily without a boost. Maybe a QR owner will chime in but i've researched the amp enough to know it can do the thrash metal tones with ease.

That's one thing I'd like to know. I'm not into the whole down tuned, brutal death metal thing.

Yes I think the QR will do early Metallica just fine.. I have a Splawn modded Marshall which is basically a Pro Mod and it gets pretty heavy sounding.. Check out some of the Pro Stock clips on Net Musicians.. Supercharged350 I think it the users name and he gets that tone in spades... Splawns are great amps. The Pro Stock is the same as a QR but with no clean channel.

the newer QR's with the gears will get you in modern metal teritory. I have an older version Splawn QR (looks like a plexi) that has shared EQ, love that amp myself..

I have a Splawn Competition (50 watt QR w/o clean) and a Nitro. The Comp can do "modern" metal w/o a boost. No problem. If for some reason you find it's just not there you can put a eq in the loop. I'm pretty sure in the beginning the QR was made to get modded 80's Marshall tones. If I put an eq in the loop and just barely adjust it, I can get the Comp to sound damn close to the NItro. What are you playing now? or what are your other options?

I had a Competition for a while, and thought it did a great job at Mid-heavy metal. Definately tight enough with enough gain to do whatever you want. Decent bottom end, but not huge. I never tried to scoop it, but it had a loop, so I'm sure you could put a graphic EQ in there.

I think it could pull of Master of Puppets without breaking a sweat. ...And Justice for All might be a little trickier, because it so much more scooped and dry.

It can do those perfectly fine without a boost, especially the Megadeth

I dig mine a lot! One of the amps I've been really satisfied with

The Quick Rod can do heavier music. Here is a clip I made when I owned mine. It was loaded with KT77s:

Ultimately the amp wasn't for me. It is a cool nonetheless.

I love my Quickrod and I think it does heavy tones very well. I think there are so many variations of metal/rock out there that you think something does metal your way but not someone else's. I would say the Nitro has more of a modern tone I guess than the QR. The QR does a great job of an over all tone and versatility. I primarily stay on gear 1 because I like that plexi tone but occasionally i bump up to gear 2 and it just grinds. I would say that speakers really affect the tonality of this amp. Not necessarily bad but just in different ways and tones. The QR, I can honestly say, that I have ZERO gas for any other amp......nothing!! The QR has actually made me spend less time on Rig-Talk and that's a good thing. I waste so much time on here :) Now I'm playing more instead of drooling over the next piece of gear. You want Van Halen/80's hair tones....there isn't a better amp out there. If you do get a QR get a new one because they have updated it with a very slight hint more of gain and they use Sino tubes that really compliment the QR.

Like others have said on this thread, it depends on your idea of modern tones. For the more extreme modern tones the Nitro would be the way to go. I definitely think the 2010 Quick Rod is the way to go compared to earlier ones. The volume knob in the loop is killer for bedroom playing and it is slightly more aggressive than the 2007-2008's when the clean channel was first updated.

And I have a brand new one available shipping from Splawn today in the black and gold plexi look. No ten week wait.

I bought a brand new one three months ago. I sold it for a 300.00 loss the next day. Not for me. I much preferred my Cornford and Wizard. The QR just had a muffled tone to it. I tried it with two different cabs. Alot of people love them. You may, it just was not for me. An SLO is a much better deal in my opinion. You can get one for not too much more used.

that's interesting... the Quickrod I have is anything but muffled, and I'm playing through a 1x12 cab

It took me a couple days to really get the feel for it, but I've dug it since I've had it. Not the end-all of amps, I still think there are better amps out there, but for the price, it's really hard to beat, especially finding them used for <$1200

Maybe not muffled. It was just lacking in clarity to my ears. There was just something about it I didn't care for compared to my other amps.
