What gear did they use? I know Gibby's into Marshalls but thats about it. The Scorps have been getting lots of play on XM Radios Hair Nation. I forgot how cool there tone was on that album.

Yeah, killer tones on there. I'd guess it's JCM800 boosted somehow.

For guitars, Mattias used to play Gibson Explorers, I think.

I'm fairly sure that they used old JMP's and not 800's...anyone know for sure?
Guitars were Gibsons and Mathias' customized Strat.

I've heard that they favored 50 watt heads, and that would make sense because the 50 watt that I had which was a 2204, seemed to nail the tone a little closer, a little brighter and cutting.

Scorps friggin rock!! I grew up learning those songs!!

Gibsons, strats (modded) and marshalls

50 Watt Plexis boosted with the preamp section of an Echoplex is what I read in a Matthias interview a while back.

Rudolf used Rivera TBR rack heads all through those years.

Matthias not sure, might be the Plexis, I've seen him later use Soldanos though.

And yes, gotta love the Scorps!

Edit: Actually LAFS might have been before the Riveras too.

such a metal tone presence... and priest on this

the tone of the 80s!

blood---stone!

Not sure about that album( CLASSIC THOUGH!!!)
But I think the Scorps are using Engls these days.
Had a Engl Invader and channel 2 was pure HAIR METAL BLISS!!

I know 1 of them or both had Wizards around that time. I think it was on the next album they used the Wizards.

If I remember from the Worldwide Live VHS tapes, it was Marshall JCM 800's, but so many other things go into the mix; pickups, guitar types, cabinets. Like Schenker, he used a wah and other types of filters to add some pop to his lead sound.

off topic, those two albums by the scorps (Blackout and LAFS) are absolute classics for rhythm, leads, songwriting, etc. A large part of "80's" Scorpions seems to have been forgotten other than Rock you Like a Hurricane, but those were some killer albums.

Come to think of it, maybe the fact that Matthias replaced the Marshall logo's with "Matthias" logo's played a part in the sound

They used JMP Super Leads for the recorded stuff. They used empty 800's for stage and not sure what they used live. On Love At First Sting tour, it sounded like some kind of Marshall; not too overly saturated.
All the great albums, they used stock Gibson pickups through cranked Super Leads. The best sound on the planet!
They started touring with Soldanos late 80's into the 90's, then came all the other slew of amps.
To get classic Scorpions sound from Lovedrive on up, Marshall JMP Super Lead non master volume heads.
Nowadays there are plenty of builders making replicas of all late 60's JTM and JMP Super Leads.
note: I record only with a 50 watt replica of a 1968 Plexi SL.
Use an overdrive or boost in front of the amp to get super saturated modern tones. Though plugging straight in still sounds best.

Love that band and the tones also. Killer riffs and solos.

16 year old thread resurrected!!!!😂😂

Their last good 80’s album before they became known for that obnoxious whistling mega hit song about farting so hard it necessitated a change of underwear
