and i always ask, what exactly do we do when we find it?? light up a cig and play Aint Talkin Bout Love in an orgasmic trance?? do we call our friends or make a post here about it with no clips?? do we take a dump?? i cant wait to find out!!!
I’m getting some white overalls personally. It will finally feel justified.

Two things:
First, I have no desire to sound like EVH.
Second, there are other shortcomings to microphonic tubes that prevent me from wanting to use them in my rig. It's not worth the feedback and squealing issues in a high gain metal context.
I'm not an EVH tone chaser either. Definitely not my thing.

The post was part in jest but there is definitely something going on with some of the old tubes I have.

I wouldn't try them in a critical situation but in non live situations there may be a use.

A quick audio test:

This is a new model Bad Cat Lynx 50 boosted with a Fortin Blade. The V1 tube is a microphonic RCA 12AU7 black plate.

I'm jasone. I'm not understanding how the forum works so I'll start here.i have a evh 5153 iii 50 watt with a matchIng 2x12 cab. These overdrive channels wnt do much of anyting.ive never owned any amplifiers with tubes before now.ive always had solid state heads with cabinets.never owned a combination amp. I've listened to others with 6l6 tubes and all channels are what I need. I have a disability and I know how to lay guitar but I'm very uneducated and this is really uncomfortable posting tis in the wrong place. If anyone can help please let me know. Thanks j.

Sounds like one of the small preamplifier tubes. Get a new tube and try substituting the tube one at a time until you find the culprit.

I've had a slightly microphonic tube in the Friedman I used to have.

It was cool, but... idk I wasn't a fan of how jumpy it was

Seems everyone has thoughts on this.

Let's add another, microphonic preamp tubes!

Been experimenting with them.

They can sound terrible until you get them settled and then they are still problematic. BUT, some, when you get them settled sound great with additional depth and overtones.

I wouldn't sell an amp with them but for a certain purpose they can be very useful!

Ei long plates sound great until microphonic then go to the PI.

That sounds pretty spot on to my Bad Cat Lynx 50, but mine has working tubes and I use a bit more gain. Not sure I really hear what the microphonic tube is doing.

Any recommendations for metal and hard rock? JJ's?

Just saw this. The vibrations feedback into the tube.

That sounds damn good

I don't hear any microphonics :dunno:

@jasone - if you see this and still need help please either DM me or start your own thread ☮️

For me, the result almost sounds like more depth to the tone. Kind of like a mild reverb?

Do any of these sound microphonic, they are non guitar. These are samples reamped.

I'm still not really hearing anything discernable :dunno:

So when you tap on that tube you can def hear the tapping coming thru speaker with guitar unplugged? I did a tube tapping test a long time ago and posted it to photofuckit (long gone) and it was very noticeable. I realize that is not the goal of the thread tho - just checking.

How much of EVH's sound was due to DLR's influence?

I think it's more than just coincidence that his sound changed drastically (for the worse IMO) after DLR left the band.

Damn

Every time I get a microphonic preamp tube it sounds the same except for the screeching whistling feedback :(

Yeah, if I slightly bump the chassis the tube reacts.

These whistle in the right circumstances, with dampeners etc I can get them to calm the feedback.
