Send my Marshall to Splawn or Friedman for mods?

I'm thinking the Splawn would be tighter so maybe it depends on what you are playing mostly.

I want my Marshall to sound such that I could stumble upon a dirt cheap Suhr SL-68 or PT100 and not be tempted to buy either one.

I hear ya. Does your Marshall already have a PPIMV? I did the one-wire-mod yesterday, and it really makes the amp into a gained out Plexi. Total cost - a piece of wire! Something to think about before spending a fortune on pro mods.

Give Carl (Fusion Bear on TGP) an email. He does all kinds of amp mods and builds. Very reasonable and quick turn around. He could put your amp back to stock, then start over with whatever mod you want.

My 100w does have a MV, but from my talking with Dave Bray, he didn't think it was post phase inverter. It's already modded to have pretty high gain. Lowell Hunt put in a loop that works fantastic too. Maybe I'll send the 50w off to Friedman and then decide what to do with the 100w based on how that sounds. First world problems, I know.

I added to my post above, suggesting Carl (Fusion Bear) as an option. I think it would be better to get the 100 watt Marshall sorted, and leave the 50 watt clone stock for now. Otherwise, it would be really hard to sell the Marshall in it's current state.

Carl did replace some stuff on the 50w before I got it. I will keep that in mind for the 100w. We've discussed it before, but it's been a while. Need to go review those emails.

Cool. A lot depends on what tone you want. Do you want a modded Plexi type gain, or, extreme Friedman or Splawn type 2203 gain? My former Friedman and Splawn modded Marshalls didn't sound like Plexis anymore after the mods.

Well, I want to be able to dial it back once in a while, but I also want enough gain on tap that I never need a pedal. The only distortion pedal I use at all is on the clean channel of my SLO with the crunch switched on. That gives a nice Plexi vibe. Otherwise, my amps all have enough gain on tap for anything. Really want the bark and growl of a mid-70s JMP, but with modern gain there if I need it.

I talked to Bray about modding an amp maybe a year ago and he said he was not taking any new amps for mod work. He was focusing on his own builds. Scott Splawn doing mod work again is news to me. He was not doing mod work anymore back when I was playing Spalwn amps.

I've talked to Dave Bray a few times about modding either of my Marshalls. He's far more into doing builds than mods and thus mods have a very big turnaround time. I last spoke with him a month ago and he said, he wouldn't be able to touch my amp for a mod until sometime in May. And the mods he said would be needed to make it into a 4550 were charged ala cart, no package deal. So it would have been like buying the head all over again. At that price, I'd be better off selling the head and putting the funds toward a new 4550. Though I still lust for a 4550; just need to find a used one. There's on eBay now that's got a misleading title, so it's hard to find and will probably never sell. But the guy wants almost as much for it as a new one costs.

Nope. I like the volumes at half way - so no need to adjust the low end with the cap swap.

Those mods are killer. Haven't had one but they are great sounding. Another option is Martin Golub, he used to work for Suhr/Bradshaw and does the Dookie/Lead mod. The lead mod is what Doug Aldrich's Marshall tone is recently. Not sure where he is now? LA Sound design? But he lives in Oregon I think, like BFG(Brian)...
