Setting Volumes on a VH4

So I am just wondering how you guys set your volumes on your VH4's?

It seems like I have to have my channel volume on channel 1 pretty much all the way up and the rest of channel volumes barely turned up. It seems that I have to have channel 3 turned down the lowest and channel 2 and 4 are pointing around in the same direction. So like channel 3 is pointing down like this / towards the floor and channels 2 and for are pointing like this - to the left.

My master is around 1?... like this \ pointed towards the sky haha...

Is there a like basic ideal for setting all your volumes to get an even sort of sound? I use every channel haha.

I liked turning my master up like that after a suggestion someone gave me saying that it allows the amp to be a little more open... I think that is what he said...?

I would have used the the clock references to name out the channel volumes, but I really don't know exactly what they are relative to where they are pointing haha...

don't know where they're each pointed, but know i've got them so that i don't get volume jumps between channels.

Would I be correct in that raising the channel volumes VS the master volume would have a different effect on the tone or something?

In general (well always), the VH4 works better with the Master Volume higher than the channel volumes. Otherwise, it over-compresses. Here's my settings on the VH4. Of course, it may be "setting" in the closest when the Hagen gets delivered today....

Running through 2-412's with Scumback 25 watt M/H speakers. They need a bump. Now, if I roll out the V30FL cabs, then some of that top end gets a haircut. Guess I should have told the OP that. But, you guys need open that amp up.

My settings (on the VH4 and Herb) are v.similar. Glad I'm not the only one!

I took a picture of my volume settings. How can you guys run your channel volumes on channels 2 to 4 so high along with the master volume super high? It seems that when I try that with my amp, the clean channel has such a drop in volume when I switch through them. Even when I run channel 1's volume all the way up.

Do you think that old pre amp tubes could be my problem? They came with my amp and very well may be over 2 years old haha....

Oh well, if you got ancient tubes that are beat to shit then I don't have anything else to say.

I run a 4x12 FL V30 Diezel cab so I don't need all those highs for my "hack" playing anyway..

So, if I get some new pre amp tubes, my volume "issue" with channel 1 my go away?

I say issue cause it is more then likely me being an idiot haha.

They all look beat to shit, from what I was told by my buddy who helped me replace my power tubes. He said he could hear that they were producing extra noise cause they were pretty much shot and to replace them when I can.

Funds right now are a little shallow...

Volume settings aren't cut and dry, the pickup selector switch, EQ knobs and Gain knob all play a role in how you perceive the volume. I'd recommend not setting up your channel volumes at low levels, you'll be surprised at the show when everything's cranked.

How old and how many hours are estimated on the Preamp Tubes? Probably should've ponied up and retubed the whole amp with a Bias adjustment at the same time.

Steve K, that Deep knob setting is most likely your EQ balance issue and why so many of us were like, Damn!! The cab must be a half or open back otherwise I don't see how you'd need so much 60-80htz?

That is true haha! It just seems weird that my channel 1 volume has to be cranked in order to keep pace with the other channels when their volumes are barely up. I bet it has to be old pre amps. I couldn't tell you how much time has been on them but they are the second set set of pre amp tubes in there since it was made in 2007. They have been in there for an estimated 2 years....

tubes can go bad... after 1 hour or 3-5 years for preamp tubes.. you can always have bad luck with them. no fault of diezel's. just throw in a new batch and be rewarded with freshness
