Don’t be afraid to put a hot mod into the 1959 to turn it into essentially a 2203. There are a lot of options to make them super versatile these days. That 74 might send your wizard out the door after you’ve got it dialed in.

A HotMod in a 1959 doesn't make it a 2203. Totally different beast.

Those later 74-75 Marshalls are my least favorite years. But with Marshalls you have to roll the dice. Most sound like crap, but there are some good ones. Might get lucky. I would never pay $2900 or $2500 for one.

In the high input follow the signal path francis and see for yourself. It’s not magically going to make it a 2203 but will add the gain a 2203 can provide stock.

And why are you going to argue about it over a forum topic? Would you rather he drill a few holes and install some sockets manually?

My Wizard never went anywhere...nor did my Marshalls.
I’m half kidding of course…I sold the MC100 I had to fund a C+ Coliseum. I was going to look for another MC100 when I found a mint 72 SuperTrem for 2K. After finding the right boost pedal combination I now have zero Wizard gas. Wizards are killer and more versatile but my 72 has the best tone I’ve ever heard, including both the MC100 and MTL50 I owned.

LOL man I have (or had as I no longer own a 1959) all the items mentionned. Still have the HotMod and two 2203s. No arguing here, I just tell it like it is.

I can’t believe these prices. I sold Steve K my mint 1974 SL for $1800 in 2015ish. I was the second owner. The amp was ripping. Wish I had kept it to sell now. ? Sold my 71 SL in 2020 for $2k. Could probably sell it for $3500+ now. Glad I kept my 67 Plexi. Maybe I should sell it for $10k.
I wouldn’t list my 67 50T for less than 7….and it’s been previously modded so there’s a few holes on the back. Restored since though. Plus original transformers…I’d say 75% of what I see for sale has at least the PT replaced.

Always good to find what gives you the tone you are looking.
If I had the chance to pick up an older out of production amp, vs selling something that is currently in production to fund it, I would do that too. Actually did that selling my UL to get this Wizard. Figured it would
Be easier to pick up another UL....now not so easy.

If I could keep most of my amps I’d have found a way to keep the 2010 MC100. It had the C transformers and was the best tone I’d had up to that point. The 72 I bought just to have a totally stock NMV Marshall; figured I wouldn’t be firing it up much. Put a few pedals in front and was blown away with the sound. It only does one thing but man, what a thing.
Those Fryette/VHT amps were easily the best bang for the buck amps used…Deliverances for 700; UL/SigX for 1500 tops. At least until Covid. Now they are priced where they really should have been all along. Great amps.

The first monomyth I had was a 1974 superlead and it was fantastic. I would feel good about buying this since he posted gut shots. The price for me is way out of my price range but if I was looking for this amp specifically I wouldn't hesitate
It still is ?

Prices on these amps are nuts. I may get flamed for this but.. I had a mint 79 JMP 2203, all stock. It was cool, but pretty meh. I lined it up next to my Quick Rod and was able to dial the QR to sound pretty much identical to the 2203 through the same cab. But then the QR had so much more, clean channel effects loop, foot switchable and don't have to play at ear splitting volume. Needless to say I cashed out on the 2203. Also had a 78 Super Lead earlier this year. pretty much same scenario. They are cool not worth the money IMO. Modern amps offer so much more.

The power in stock 2203 circuits is with boosts, but I get where you’re coming from amp vs amp. I certainly don’t like a stock 2203. I prefer modded.

Yeah. I think the thing people don't realize is that some people don't give two shits about a "clean channel" or versatility. I like an amp that is built to do something. If it is built to be clean, may it be the best fucking clean you ever had. If it is high gain, may it set fire to the unsuspecting christians. If I wanted versatility, I could buy literally any solid state or modelling amp out there on top of the many amps that every amp maker tries to push. An amp that covers all bases is perfect for marketing and selling a million amps. This amp is for a guy that plays blues or metal or country.. There are a lot of sounds in a line 6. AND THEY ALL SUCK. I find a marshall; modded or unmodded that has THAT sound...with or without a boost pedal, and I am fucking down.

They aren’t the most versatile amps; and if you didn’t try boosting them then you missed out on what makes them special. Or, maybe the caps were shot? But, a QR is basically a boosted Marshall circuit anyway, plus you have all the bells/whistles added like loop/clean channel. Personally the Splawns I’ve played aren’t bad sounding amps but they seem kinda sterile or flat sounding to me. But that’s just me.

Yes, that’s always been my approach too. An amp that does many different sounds 7 or 8/10 good isn’t very interesting to me. Much prefer to have several amps where each one does at least one thing 10/10 even if very specific. Practical to me is boring, but amazing tone is amazing tone

The simpler, the better. Every time.
