I'm using a dinosaur RP1000 that has run it's course. It still works flawlessly, but it's a dinosaur and a big old tank.. Times have changed, and better effects units are certainly out there..

Must haves:
Volume pedal/level control. I use the volume pedal as an attenuator of sorts. I can crank the Friedman, and control it with the volume pedal/level control.
FX Loop. I still like an FX loop, I have pedals I still like to use, including an external 10-Band EQ, (unless the unit has a great EQ - the RP1000 does not).

Don't need:
Modeling. I'm pure amp, don't need modeling. Don't need boosts/OD's/Drives, but they all have them. Just modulation, reverb, delays. GOOD ones.

Bonuses: Great univibe, a good EQ where I wouldn't need my MXR 10-band, good harmonizer, (the RP's is awful), detune/pitch... Lush chorus, and reverbs.

Good build. Contenders:
Boss GX-100
Boss GT-100, (not better effects than the RP)?
Line 6 Pod Go? It seems like the best option, but they feel a bit flimsy. The expression pedal is somewhat awkwardly placed..
Don't know much about Headrush?
Zoom?

Helix is too much. The LT is too much, and the HX FX has no expression pedal.. Is it worth adding one?

I just got the FX8 and love it. It's a bigger footprint, and you would need an external expression pedal for volume, but it sounds great. Plus, you can control (some) amp channels with it. First thing I did is set up a dry patch with my amp set to destroy, and a clean patch with a phaser.

I can't wait to run it in stereo.

I have the Ms-3 I got from Alund…as well as some only fans Pics….And it will do what you want but you will have to buy an expression pedal to hook up to it.

Fractal is too complicated for my patience..

Another NOS RP1000. Got the job done till now, why change horses midstream?

I'm not too great with computers, but it's pretty easy to use their editor. I did the usb to my laptop and got up and running pretty quickly. I liked it better than the Line 6 Helix/HX interface. They all suck compared to having knobs, but it wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be.

I use my Helix LT for everything nowadays but if I was going into an amp I would use a hxfx without hesitation. I use a mission expression pedal with the LT and would definitely use it with the hxfx. I like the Mesa eq pedal and the effects work pretty well for me, especially with all the recent updates. The reverbs have definitely improved from what they used to be. I'm not sure if there's a better solution out there for you but the hxfx with an expression pedal would do the job for me.

Fractal is easy peasy compared to the Eventide H90. Those are the two boxes I have experience with that fit your parameters. To get what you want you are going to need to spend time figuring it out. Quality multi effects units are not plug and play IME

I have both. Fractal is really nice. Simple out of the box sounds. Then after about a week you start to wonder how you can “improve” x, y, and/or z.. then you start to learn the fractal one parameter at a time. There is no way to read that manual and have a eureka moment with fractal. Just 1-2 parameters at a time. Then after a few weeks it’s quite simple. There are some things that I’ll never understand in it but I’m not sure it matters to me.
H90 is smaller.. and again. 1 parameter at a time. Same thing. You will not read and think. Well, I’m ready! Ain’t gonna happen. But starting with a factory setting and tweaking will let you learn how to do a lot from the box alone.
You just have to embrace the learning curve. Resistance is futile!

I use HX Effects with Roland EV-5; works great IMO.

I owned the GT-100 and GT-1000, I liked both; maybe look into the GT-1000 Core?

Zoom G6 was a good recommendation too; I considered one.

Zoom MultiStomp 70-CDR? No expression pedal though.

Starting to look at the GT-100. Many are cheap used, and I'm sure the effects are more abundant and better than the RP. I'm starting to be less concerned about a smaller footprint.. The GX-100 is on the list too.
