Just wanted to see what you guys thought as I begin my tweaking. :) Looks like I'm finding myself needing to learn me some Slipknot for a metal jam band; stuff like "Before I forget" off Subliminal Verses.

I believe that Jim Root actually uses Orange Rockerverb 100s; not sure if that's his studio rig as well. I'm guessing that the Orange amps plus his drop-Z tuning are what gets that signature "earthy but sledgehammer" tone. But I don't have an Orange Rockerverb :) So...any suggestions for Egnater modules and settings?

Thanks guys!

You should start HERE first

:D

Seriously, not a Slipknot fan, but I'd bet an Axe-Fx would get you there, and more, beyond this current phase yer in.

Not being judgmental, but I've been thru more phases and spent da money and lost it as a result.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've actually known about the Axe-FX for a long time, and I'm looking forward to reviewing the software version for one of the pro audio magazines when it's finished. Trust me, I would love an Axe-FX!

Unfortunately, it's simply not a possibility. There is just no money right now for that level of purchase. At most I could buy a new module, better yet to either use what I have, or have one modded.

The last couple albums / tours he has been using Rivera KR7's. I honestly can get close to that tone w/ my EG5 6550 / GTE34L's, G12T75 speakers and EMG pickups.

W/ my Randall RT250 and those tubes, and my Egnater TM212, I felt it was close enough for that kind of tone. Very ballsy, punchy and growly.

I'm not a big high gain user, but I'm curious as to what options/alternatives are out there to get you close? For me, I'm into classic Vox and Marshall tones, but to get that isn't cheap if you buy the real deal, or get something new that does it well. So if you want "_________" tone, and don't have the $5K+ to get it, what options are out there? My ADA MP-2 and Marshall JMP-1 get more high-gain than I'll ever need, but certainly not what nu-metal players would want/need. I have my vintage Marshall tone covererd (fighting GAS for an EL34 100/100 and at least one 1960 stereo cab) a Tech 21 Liverpool pedal, and ordered an AC4TV hoping it will kill my GAS, if not I'll need spend another $1400 or $2K to get the handwired AC15 or AC30!

I can't afford my GAS!

EG5 all day all night. At least until Egnater designs something a little more "modern". Truthfully I think the Randall camp has way more to offer in terms of flavors for high gain tones. There are new Randall modules coming out Summer NAMM.

Jim uses everything from Orange, Mesa, Bogner, and I know he is endorsed by /13 though I've never seen one on stage. Lucky bastard.

The JMP-1 modded by Trace @ Voodoo really did my metal stuff well when I had it. It was my main tones for years...before I got on the Egnater kick! :)

I know that he was using the Rivera's at the show I saw him in a few weeks ago. I saw them in a rack all lit up off to the side in road cases. Sounded just like his tones off of the most recent album.

Actually, the trick to getting happening modern high gain with eggy gear is the pickups.

an EMG 85 through the Erect module is one of the nicest modern heavy tones I've heard.

Otherwise, more tasteful pickups yield a more tasteful, heavy Marshall sound to my ears with Eggy gear.

I was backstage at the recent ( a few months ago) Slipknot US arena tour, the rack of Riveras' was Micks, we actually talked about his new Rivera signature head in length. Jim Root was playing Rockerverbs the night I saw them but maybe he was using a backup rig that night.

As for the newest album id say the tonal differences between the two guitars is pretty noticeable to me. I have often muted the left or right channel to get a clearer picture of each tone that is happening.

Yeah, I completely agree with this, in fact it was one of those "ding" moments for me. Without the right pickups though, throwing a boost pedal in front of the module will work also.

Combine these two tricks for total mayhem....
