How are the mid gain tones on the SLO? We all know the lead channel is amazing for that searing hi gain solo tone, but how does the amp do with lower gain, plexi-ish tones?

I don't think there are many good plexi tones to be found in it

But the crunch channel is nice; Clapton has used it in the early 90's
Check out the YT vid titles "Eric Clapton - Journeyman Tour - Philadelphia, PA (05-04-92)"
It'll give you an idea of how it can sound with medium gain tones

The only criticism I've heard is some don't like the clean channel for a totally clean tone. I think its better than some high gainers out there. Edge of breakup and beyond is awesome IMO. So I think it does a good plexi tone for breakup, but a plexi clean it falls short.

I often found the mid gains lacking personality when I had mine, too clean and sterile, too polite.

Plexi breakup is what I'm more after. Just curious because it seems that everyone just talks about the lead channel, but the amp has such a great reputation overall.

I need to spend more time with mine. I used it on our latest record, and haven't fired it up since.

I live on the lead channel, but lots love the crunch and boost it for heavier tones. I've heard Gary Moore and Clapton did it that way too so there must be something to it.

The clean channel in crunch mode is awesome. It doesn't quite have the crushed glass mid sparkle that a good vintage Marshall has but it's great never the less. I preferred it over the lead channel for most of the stuff I used it for (as did clapton and Moore).

DeMartini also prefers the crunch channel with a boost for soloing 90% of the time.

I'm a crunch channel with a boost guy too. It's awesome. It also does mid gain stuff very well. Not exactly Plexi-ish, but still very good mid gain tones in the amp.

Listen to Gov't Mules first five albuns.
He also used a Diaz CD-100 live at that time. But most of the studio work was done using an SLO.
Those are my favorite albuns from the band. My favorite guitar tone too.

I was able to check out warrens amp and set up on the eq and channels and talk to warren about it. He uses the overdrive 90 percent of the time and the clean/crunch for the intro to "back for more". His rhythm and lead tone has the same amount of gain and he has the sound guy turn him up in the mix for soloing.

^^^^^
I wonder if he runs his mids on 11 like Gary Moore use to do with his Soldano's to get that midrange bark and cut in the mix.

Gary Moore used the crunch channel with a Marshall Guv'nor pedal I believe. I didn't find the SLO's mid-gain tones anything like a plexi which has more grit and kerrang...something I miss when I play an SLO. But, they are amazing in their own right.

Funny how tastes differ, I did not like Gary Moores' SLO tones much, I prefer his older marshall tones when he was playing the red Strat.

Anyone who has not seen the 1987 concert needs to watch this, packed full of Garys' Irish roots!

Warren Haynes ran one ..or several for years in his live rig. He also had several other amps(Marshal, fenders, custom stuff), but the Soldano was on his rig for a while. That guy has mid gain tone for days.

I like the crunch channel for low and mid gain tones. The trick to a great clean is the crunch channel with the master practically dimed, using the gain knob for decibels. But watch out if you switch into that channel with any delay tails.
