So I brought a half stack to my apartment

I brought my old Mesa Mark IV head and recto cab to my apartment. Haven't played it yet.... just going over the amp (cleaning jacks, pots etc...) as it's having some noise issues, but i think I found the problem, a dirty power tube socket. Anyways, should I expect an eviction coming soon if I fire this thing up to a decent volume? or is it perfectly cool to play thru a half stack in a apartment? In the middle of the day? I don't want to just look at it. I had to bring it here cause my parents don't want to keep the thing at their house anymore.

Make sure no ones around first. Then crank it. Or find out when no ones around in the building.

Back in the early 90s I completely messed up a large CRT television by parking a 4x12 in front of it while I answered the phone.
Ahhhh the good ole days before LCDs, etc.

Curiously.. Why would you leave your machines behind at yer moms??
I'd be taking that shit with me..

I have the same half stack and play it in my apartment. It really depends on the construction. I'm not saying I can crank it, but I can get decent volume before the neighbors complain. I just called my next door, top and bottom neighbors to gauge the max volume I could play without it bothering them, and used a db meter.

I just recently picked up a 4x12 marshall cab and I was surprised at how good it sounded at low volume next to my 2X12's.
put it in Tweed, class A , triode / Harmonics and you should be good to go

Apartments just don’t have the wall insulation or sound proofing to hold back a 4x12 with a head opened up. You’re asking for cops knocking on your doors for sound violation. You may run the risk of eviction strikes. With covid going on and the number of people working from home during the day at an all time high, I suggest you invest in a loadbox for recording and ditch the 4x12 either in a storage shed or sell it online.

I’ve played half-stacks in apartments with no problems and I’ve played combo amps in an apartment with tons of issues. All depends on your neighbors, man!

Last apartment I lived in I couldn’t even use my entertainment system.

I suppose I will try this approach. I'll just ask them at what level does it bother them? Problem is, the walls are paper thin in this place, there's hardly any sound insulation. My one neighbor plays his rap music really loud and I never bother him about it, so it shouldn't be a problem if I play through my amp once in a while, right?

The great thing about a mark 4 is that you can play at TV volume’s and sounds great. You wont get the thump obviously but on 2 that thing will shake walls. Or just a Kemper AXE FX

Well it's the whole volume issue thing. Before when I wanted to play guitar through an amp I'd just stop by my parents place once in a while and crank it up for a hour or so and it's a big house too with good sound dampening, so I didn't have a problem with the neighbors... just my parents. If it's too loud my mom would come running down stairs, open the door and glare at me till I turned it down. Here I got no parents telling me to turn down, but I got neighbors, and druggy neighbors at that.... don't want to piss them off so It's a shitty situation either way.

So I was able to try out the benson Vinny. Mind you, it’s a 1 watt amp.. we all know how they determine speaker sensitivity...

The benson Vinny was so damn loud. I’m in a detached home and it would push the limits.

one thing I’ve done with good results, is I’ve used a Eminence Maverick. It allows you to change the speakers sensitivity, which will have way more impact than changing wattage.. this allowed me to push my fender deluxe reverb into a sweet spot, or at least get rid of the ice pick/ swarming bee’s

It’s a rabbit hole. There are many ways to get the same result but they all result in compromise. “Throwing a blanket over your cab”, if you will.

Ya, it does sound good at low volumes, especially with the tweed setting, class A and triode, but I just can't help myself sometimes, i gotta turn it up a bit. It sounds amazing at band volumes.

Turn it up as loud as possible, no problems at all.
