So......shipping my Amp off to Mesa Boogie to get modded...

I've never spoken to Mike before. But I have spoken to Rich several times. Nice guy. Very helpful. Even when I asked novice/stupid questions (like, "When was my amp born?").

I broke my Nomad once (like an idiot, I tried to run it on the same circuit as a window A/C unit - and did some damage to it) and had to have it repaired. On Mesa's web site I found an "authorized" Mesa repair shop about an hour away. Called them and made an appointment. My wife and I decided to make an evening of it and drove over there together.

It took us a while to find the place. I started getting nervous. We followed the instructions and turned off of the main highway onto a back road, turned onto a sandy road when we reached the barn, and turned off of that road when we found the hand-written sign nailed to a tree. We reached a clearing with a vehicle in it. The repair shop was just across a creek. It was a very old building, pretty much a shack. There were no signs. It honestly looked like something out of a horror movie.

I told my wife there was no way we were getting out of the vehicle. We turned around and left. Once we got to the main road again, I called the shop back - just to verify we had been at the right place. Turns out we were at the right place. I told them that once we saw their shop, we decided to pass on dropping off the amp.

On the way home, I called Mesa and spoke to Rich. I told him about our experience. He was very apologetic and turned the call over to his manager (I don't remember his name, though). The manager was also very apologetic and told me that the repair shop's authorization status was going to be "reevaluated". They gave me an RMA number and asked me to send in the chassis. George (I think that is the name) actually worked on the amp. He did a wonderful job fixing what I had broken. He also "threw in" some cleanup/tuneup work for me. When it was ready for return, Rich called me to tell me when to expect it to be shipped. We spoke for a while on the phone. He told me he used a Nomad for keyboard work - and loved how it sounded.

Mailman1971, I didn't mean to sideswipe your thread. But, I haven't shared this experience with many. And, in the light of your experiences with Rich and Mike, I thought it may be interesting for others to read.

Thanks!

Mike has updated / modded 2 of my amps in the last year. A MkIII blue & a Tremoverb. You will not be disappointed! Once he's done with them, I swear these old amps crush what is around new these days...

What was done to your Tremoverb ?

Well just shipped the amp. Now comes the journey of waiting.
This one is gonna be cool.
Pulled the chasis out of it to send it and seen MB -95 written inside. Looks like this one could of been out to Mesa in the past.
Seen some scribble of "Rhythm Chan 2" on it as well.

A clip will have to follow. Will Simulclass be running beer and liquor at the same time?

It's going to be killer. He did a couple for me. One is actually landing soon. First class pro act those guys are. The entire process to the way they pack it up. FYI. Mesa changed their system and lost all data before 91. They have records from 91 but the detail of what was done is lost. Mike B has a board with all amps he modded, or at least IIc's he plussed. There is no record of any IIc's that were sent back for the update early on. They swapped the C board for the original IIC+ board in those so they were not modded to + specs.
The III++ mod just does something to those amps. Mine was a ripping beast. I never should have sold it. It was huge sounding.
I am waiting to see a particular Recto dethroned. :D
Mike B is an incredible tech. I swear he can do these amps blindfolded in no time. After all he's been there for only 40 years

(About to use my Jedi powers to flow walk into the future)

Mailman "OMG! Greatest Mesa Mark amp I have ever heard!!"

Two weeks later.....

text from mailman "wanna trade?"

text from Me "yep. I gots to try it."

It then disappears into the black hole that is my collection.

Maybe I should let my dibs go now....

I sent it in for a recap & general look over, plus the tremolo just didn't sound right. He replaced the dodgy LDRs which fixed that problem. I also asked them to check the volume level between channels because my modern channel didn't get the big bump like other rectos, and he told me that this is normal for the T-verbs. In general it just sounds fresh & killer when they come back- 20-30 year old caps to me just start to sound a little thin even if they're not dead yet. Honestly, the T-verb to me crushes every other Recto I've ever heard, and I just leave all the tone knobs at noon. What an effin' cool amp.

On my Mark III Mike did the reverb mod, a full recap, and the C30 mod to bring some of the shrill off- more like a red stripe. Before I couldn't run the presence past about 2, now I'm clocking it around 4 & it's easier to listen to. We also spoke about the III+ mod & I decided against it since it actually rounds off the gain & aggression a little. To me that's what sets the MKIII apart- it's like a hammer to your face!

Thats accurate on the + mod but the ++ mod rounds it off some as you say bringing it closer in tone to the IIC+ with the first + mod. The second + mod shifts the frequencies some and brings in a little more gain. It's not a huge difference but it's definitely there. You can hear the added gain when you pull he knob. It changes the feel a little also. I stayed on the ++ mod on mine as it is engaged by pulling R2 while on the lead channel.

I'm sure this thing will be awesome when you get it back.

I have never had anything but good dealings with Mesa....and Mike B. Is amazing to deal with.

When you think about what Mike does for the price, it's such a steal to be able to send any Mesa back for mods/updates etc...that's a great thing for us or anyone for that matter to send Mesas back and have the designer himself do the work, or at least oversee it.

Mike said the turn around time would only be a couple weeks. That's not bad at all.

Oh come on man. This has only happened 6 times before. You make it sound like it's all the time.
