So sick of hand problems..

I got a real bad case while attending GIT. Took a long time to get over it. Stretching before playing, and ice after playing did the trick for me. a bit of weights helped too.

I've got the same problems. Broke my wrist 3 times, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. It hurts every day

thats my nub of a fretting pinky from dropping a bowling ball on it when i was a kid. i can barely move the thing and stretching my hand at all is a pain in the ass. they told me to have surgery cause as my hand grew it was going to want to cramp up like a fist but i never had it done cause it never really bothered me with anything.. till i started playing guitar, which is trying to stretch my hand the complete opposite way it wants to go, which makes my wrist want to lock up constantly, and yeah... what i would give for a normal fretting hand. one day ill get the surgery

I just started getting a pain where my arm bends lately. Doc said 2 tabs of Advil just two days ago. I have yet to try it. Stretching makes mine worse.

That sucks dude. Hand pain is a bitch. I used to gig 5 nights a week, 4 of them being acoustic duo gigs. I did a ton of soloing on that gig on 12's on my Taylor. After about 3 months of doing it it got to the point where I was barely able to hold a can of soda in my left hand. I started acupuncture, took glucosamine, and fish oils havent had a problem since. Hope you get it under control.

My CTS and Tendonitis were so bad at one point I quit playing for seven years.

Glucosamine saved my ass, give it a try

not to diminish the situation by bringing up something like this, and I'm being 100% serious, but doubt anyone would talk about this because it might be taboo.

But stop masterbating.........serious you might not think it's an issue........but

:D    :gethim:

NEVER!!!

For those of you who have CTS, my advice is pay attention to that hand and seek medical help.
I deal with a lot of CTS and cumulative trauma injuries (hand) in my job and we try to treat it
conservatively as long as possible but most often than not, it leads to surgical procedure (CT release).

Try to stretch before playing guitar and always take mini breaks when doing anything repetitive with your hands.
Yes, that includes fapping everyday.

this may sound stupid but its absolutely true:

before undertaking ALOT of writing for homework, i soak my writing hand under hot water for 10 minutes, using soaps with built in lotion in it as well.

keeps me from getting cramps and tendon issues from all the writing.

not joking here at all.

i remember reading where someone did the same before playing guitar - minus the lotion part. i have never had to do it for playing - at least not yet. i usually do full finger stretches, webbing stretches, and grab/releasing the air in a quick but very relaxed motion for a few minutes.

another trick i learned was to get the blood flowing to my hands first by taking your thumb up against a solid surface, or holding it up (opposite motion of grabbing) with your opposite hand, and carefully pulling back with constant light force (it should not hurt) to relieve pressure off of the main vein that is can sometimes become pinched between the tendons and that thumb muscle.

it allows blood to flow more freely - you can feel the difference in the center of your palm.

sometimes after stretching that muscle ill give my hand a good shake for the bloodflow to get started as well.

all of those have worked for me. but i do not attempt to play without doing at least one of them first - you can cause damage that way and i might be able to just pick up a guitar and go at it without doing any of them right now, but im sure it will definately cause problems down the road if i dont. sometimes i can tell when a day is a bad day to play, and sometimes its not a problem at all.

Some good suggestion with stretches and the vitamin/diet stuff. I would say be sure you are hydrated as well...I mean 8-10 glasses of water a day for real. Alot of people don't(including myself) but I've been told by alot of people that dehydration can cause alot of issues(or make issues worse)- that once they started drinking lots of water, they felt better and issues diminished.

WHOA!!! Thats crazy.
I just read Tony Iommi has the exact same problem, and he's had surgery once and needs
it again but doesn't want too.Doesn't like the idea of it.

I hear that! I got a ganglion cyst in my wrist that acts up and is excrutiating. I eat REALLY healthy and work out (which actually makes it worse sometimes). I found that tuning to D helps me alot. Keeps it from flaring up as often.

I have a bit of a different twist on hand problems. I have a nickle allergy that comes and goes. Unfortunately, right now it is very bad and I can't play my guitars at all. My hands get all of these little bumps/blisters under the skin that are very painful. Then they swell up and the skin just flakes off.

I read on line that some people have had luck using stainless steel strings. I might give that a try. This allergy runs in my family. My mom and aunt both have it very bad. I even have to watch what sort of deodorant I use.

Anyone else experience this??
