...Nobody can downpick MOP as tightly and aggressively as the recorded version. Also explains a little about the tone as well:

Rumour was that Cliff had difficulty tracking that song up to speed so the slow down trick was to accommodate that.

fraudtallica. ill cover MoP when i have a couple free hours, ill shred that shit. i know i have the actual drum track somewhere

I think we all know that Hetfield can in fact play MOP st this speed with precision. But I've always thought there is this odd feel, tightness and tonality to the rhythm guitar tracks....this definitely explains it, at least for me.

Het used to nail puppets during the Black Album tour but he struggles these days.

While on topic, to the guys with mighty right hands, do you notice that you've slowed down a tad or just don't have the same arm stamina as you got older? I used to be able to chug to 220bpm for 3-4mins straight no sweat and now I struggle to get past 2mins. Aging is a bitch 😭

Stage left guitarist can hang with Het or anyone else for that matter.

at 43 now this is something im cognizant of, im certainly not the ball of energy i was 20 years ago and im sure my 40yd dash has lost a step or two, but just the other night i was really thrashing out for a good couple hours, which is rare for me to play that long these days, i hardly play long enough to even get properly warmed up now, but i was actually saying i think im as good, or maybe even a little better than i used to be. i just play much more relaxed these days, i use normal string gauges instead of telephone pole thick ones i did for 25 years exerting all sorts of energy. i hope i have a couple more years of kicking ass lol

Yeah, definitely. I could easily play MOP downpicked, even faster than the album when I was younger. These days I alternate pick it and I am fine with that, lol.

I think part of that though is also playing slower stuff in general most of the time vs. always being on 10.

There's a difference between playing that fast, and playing that fast consistently enough to triple track 3 really tight guitar tracks to tape while the recording studio time is running and you need to get an album out the door. Obviously they weren't getting the level of inhuman precision they wanted and had to figure out a way to.

These days it's easier because you can just punch in and out and all sorts of other easier workflow tricks.

They did the same thing for For Whom The Bell Tolls (recorded slower then sped it up to pitch) but funny enough no one is trying to argue they can't play that at speed.

because for whom the bell tolls isnt fast?? MoP is fast for sure, but its nothing superhuman that would draw questions to if they sped anything up, they let that info out they cheated on their own. i think they said they spent six months on rhythm guitars alone, which is just crazy to me, dosent seem like they were in much of a rush

The whole Master of Puppets album start to finish was done September to December 1985. And that would include setting up for and recording all the different instruments on the analogue equipment of 1985.

They made a decision to get the sound they wanted which is no worse at least than modern people quantizing every drum and guitar note.
