Seems like there is a lot of class struggle going on at Rig Talk between the haves and have nots.

So, I decided to make a poll to find out how to tell the elitist douches from the blue collar musicians.

All of this is in jest, so take it with a grain of salt. No Crystal frets debates.

Be careful how you vote, all those nonconforming, anti-establishment hippies became the Yuppies of the '80s. This will be on your permanent record. ;)

i didn't choose from the poll selections, but feel that one can be considered an Elitist douche when he/she acts as though there is no possibility of getting nice results from gear, unless there is some sort of pedigree associated with said gear.

Bottom line for me-- Those who can-- DO. Those who can't, can either figure out a way over, under, around or through their obstacles or not... and with the gear selection available nowadays, and the internet forums like this with helpful members willing to assist-- there's really no reason anyone can't get nice results w/ today's gear smorgasbord of choices to pick from.

"Your guitar cord costs more than lunch at McDonalds" should be changed to "Your guitar cord costs more than dinner at a fine restaurant" :D

Indeed, dinner at McDonalds is what $6? My cord costs a bit more than that.

But I also think number 2 is a good one "your amp costs more than your house". I saw the second marshall ever made on ebay go for $500,000
Could you imagine!? Is it hand wired with Jimi Hendrix's pubic hair or something?

Well a fine restaurant in the OC is upwards of $150-200 a plate. Can't you get those GC cables in those stacks for $5 bucks. I'm sure I've read guys saying that anything more is snobbery.

What's funny to me is 6 people so far think you're a douche if you have actually played the gear you have an opinion about.

How the Hell could I have a real opinion if I hadn't played it?

And at least I can keep the NOS tubes without being a douche.

Thanks for the response so far...

OOHHHH I got it....

You know you're an elitist douche when arguing that tone is in the fingers/hands, when there are guys like this out there:

I agree with the post saying that it's when you fold your arms and dismiss a band based on their equipment.
I once had an encounter with a local jazz player (coked up 48 year old with no sense of melody what so ever... He just believes he is God, and can only play at lightning speed), who wanted to play at an open mic night I was playing. He came over and started inspecting my guitar. It was a Fender American Deluxe 60th An. FMT Strat, with low action set up with 11s... "It will have to do" he said...
He plays an Ibanez something, set with 08s, and action so low that anything else but his constant fiddling is impossible. This he proceeded to lecture me on, because there was no artistic freedom in my guitar.
Now he is an elitist douche, because he talks down to people who don't have a doctorate in advanced jazz fusion theory. He expects people to be in constant awe of him. He acts like he is doing you a favour by playing live. THAT is a true douche. Unfortunately there are a lot of these dudes around, that feel the world owes them adoration for their speed noodling.
Fortunately the truly great players that I have met are not like this.

I actually just low balled him on a big gig in April, and made sure the agents know what a coked up drunk he is. And now I got the gig. I would normally NEVER do anything like that, but he had been talking sh*t about my band to bar owners and the like, so I couldnt resist the urge to take something big from him. So long... You elitist douche! (it's actually a great term :D)

How about "you're an elitist douche when you quote your own pretentious thoughts in your signature"?

How bout if your pants have swirlies and shit on the pockets? I hate that shit. WTF is up with the chick pants guys?

I don't even qualify as blue collar. I'm a straight up po' boy musician.

How about when you beg and plead your younger brother to come to your gig. Then when he comes you get him to move your gear in and out and boss him around like he's a minimum wage roady.

Oh,wait. I think that's from the list of You May Be a Poseur If...
Poseur??? If he actually helps out, that's just called being smarter than your brother :D
Or in my case, my teenage son ;)

THAT really sounds like a douche at another board I was on. I can't stand that guy. He is just sooooo jaded because he is soooo good, but the world is just soooo crappy no one will recognize his genius. Plus he is loaded with tens of thousands of dollars in vintage equipment, and everything else is just not even worthy of being called a plank. Hate that guy.

Everybody, make sure you watch this guy's video before you comment on his words. Otherwise, he acts like an elitist douche. BTW saying tone is in the fingers/hands just means people who can actually play have the best tone. People with the best gear usually just think they can buy what comes naturally from the soul. I'll take Muddy Waters with a beat plank and rusted strings over some douche with a rack rig any freaking day. (if I can get it) He gets better tone without a doubt.

When you have the arrogance to say/think any of the following:

You have a signature sound
You don't think tone woods make a difference in your guitar's or rig's sound
You view your rig as size related or think that a big rig is related to ego and a small meat and potatoes rig is better or vise versa.
You don't realize that all pieces of gear are just tools for expression and how you use them is what matters.
Your RT moniker is axemeaquestion.

Even though you did.

Glassy, I'm the farthest thing from an elitist.

1)I'm hanging around with the common folk.
b)I'm not advocating spending $10K on a rig when you can have everything you'd need for far less than that.

No, it's people that use X patterns for their speakers in their cabinets that are the elitists.
