Go check out SgtThump's YT vids where he compares an SLO to a 5150 and a Diezel. And you'll see that in all reality... most high gain amps sound similar and all this tone chasing BS is just splitting hairs.

Making a comparison with a low quality youtube clip hardly settles anything...Of course they sound similar, they're compressed to hell.

I don't know man...there's a shit ton of difference between a 5150 and an SLO. Sorry but suggesting there isn't is laughable. I know one is based off the other..but cmon...I've played them both. It seems to me that people who actually own/have owned one and spent a decent amount of time with an SLO know. I guess the only truth here is that everyone hears things differently. I'm glad for all of you that like your amps...its a great feeling to be happy with your tone. But i always chuckle a bit when i see these threads about "this sounds just like....." No. If you come to that conclusion after owning an SLO and spending some time with it, more power to you. Theres a reason many world class players choose an SLO over other amps. I'll just leave it at that.

It's not that there is a "ton of difference" or there isn't. It's that you can dial them in to sound similar without really trying, because they are already similar amps. And if a 6505 or 5150 or whatever sounds similar to an SLO, then an SLO clone build ain't gonna be too far off either ;) And my point is all the over analyzing and nitpicking between minutiae of amp tone is ridiculous.

Then most of those same players sell them and go back to their modified Marshall's and Fenders after a few years of using them , back to where it all started . :D
  yeah me too..though I'm not a world class player. Just can't justify a 2500 amp when I love a good Marshall just as much. But my point was more to the 5150 comparison. Any number of those players (Clapton, Moore, Haynes, DeMartini, Lynch) would easily have gotten an endorsement by Peavey if they really thought the 5150 was the same. And then they wouldn't have to actually buy the amps, which they did from Soldano. Like I said, just get yourselves your 5150s, SLO clones, whatever. I feel bad for the dude who spends 2K on a SLO clone and has it built by someone, hence the high cost. When he could have saved 400 more and gotten the real thing used. And when/if they sell the SLO they will get their money back. If they sell the clone ....maybe 800-1k.

Nobody builds an SLO Clone because it's cheaper. As you pointed out, it doesn't make sense when you can just get a used one. People build SLO Clones because they enjoy the process of actually building an amp. I can go out and buy an SLO right now. But I won't. Because I understand that I can get "my sound" from pretty much any high-gain amp. I just like to build. It's fun.

Look at Killswitch Engage. They've used EVERY high-gain amp under the freaking sun and their sound NEVER changes. They've used Diezels, Framus, Mesa, Peavey, Splawn, and yes... even the SLO. But hey... their "tone" stays the same lol. That's because no matter what amp you use, you're gonna dial it to sound like what you hear in your head.

When those guys bought those amp there was no 5150. And the SLO was arguably the first of its kind.
But then the 5150 came out. And they still kept and used the Soldano. And if they wanted to they easily could have endorsed the 5150 and gotten free amps.
