Some Hi-Gain Axe-FX patches w/Stereo Micropitchshift For Ya

Guys,

So... I was playing around with my Axe and I noticed that some of the patches that I programmed for direct use that sounded killer direct sounded like utter crap through my VHT 2/50/2 and stereo 4x12 (G12H30s) at loud, gig-level volumes (they sounded fine at bedroom volume). I found this to be the case even though I had turned off the cab sims globally... Anyway, I wanted some heavy sounding patches that would be good at loud volumes. I noticed that Mark Day (samhill) had uploaded a few patches that he was using live in his band and even though he uses much more gain than I would ever use based on his clips, I decided to check them out since they must have sounded good to him in the room playing live. These two patches were made starting with his main rhythm and solo patches. I gotta say that when I uploaded them and started playing with my guitars, my mind was blown by the amount of gain in these patches. Our boy, Mark LOVES his gain on top of using those EMGs! :D

Anyway, I liked how the presets were mapped out in the editor and the delay settings so I figured I'd tweak 'em to my taste. I started by turning off the drive block. I then ramped down the gain on the amp and changed a lot of the other amp settings (CA3+ LD) until I got the level of gain and tone I wanted with my guitars and my setup at LOUD volume. I also modded the pitch block settings to be a +9/-9 cent stereo micropitchshift, 100% wet, panned hard left and right with a small amount of different delay on each side. This follows a mixer block and is set low in the mix for some icing on the cake - if you want to hear it more, just crank it up in the mix and you'll be all modern VH chorusy.

I have the pitchshift bypassed by default, but I have a controller set to turn the pitch effect on/off from my GCP. You can just turn it on yourself in the editor or use a midi CC to turn it on in real time when you want it. There is also the drive and a phase and flange that are bypassed that you can turn on and off in the mix with midi CCs if you choose. I liked the delay set as it was - nice! I also left the graphic and parametric EQs the same, in fact, I didn't even notice if they were on or off in the patch. Oh yeah... I also turned off the volume modifer Mark had on these presets, so they should work out of the box with no mods...

These patches are more the 80s metal sound I like rather than modern metal, but are a bit more aggressive/modern sounding - I really like them alot though. I actually think in the room with my setup, these sound alot like what the Cameron CCM sounded and felt like to me. This is about as much gain as I'd ever use and as I said, I reduced the gain hugely from the original patches by bypassing the drive and turning the amp gain down. These sound really good to me LOUD through my VHT2/50/2 and my Mojave stereo 4x12 w/G12H30s. I had my VHT channels set about half on volume and the presence and depth between 1/4 and 1/2 way up - voicing pushed in. I just want you to understand exactly how I'm hearing these in the room. Either turn off the global cabs if you are using output one or use output two which bypasses the cab block- these patches will work for live either way. I have flat global EQ and left the power amp sim on...

The patches are the same, except the Solo patch has the boost on the amp switched on (drive block still off), is slightly louder and has the delay higher in the mix.

Anyway... I really dig how these turned out and I look forward to playing them live and LOUD at an upcoming jam... Many thanks to Mark for posting these! Nice job on the layout and how you thought these out. With my tweaks, they work great for my ears now... I'll probably mess with this same layout and change the amps, etc for different tones...

Sorry I didn't get a chance to record these but they are really live patches you have to hear in the room friggin' loud. :)

Crank up your Axe live setup LOUD!!!! - load 'em in, tweak 'em to taste and lemme know what you think! All opinion are of interest to me...

The patches are here (NOTE!!!! - You have to right click [control-click on Mac] and save 'em from the links below... Normal click will just take you to a white page!):

Heavy Live Solo Patch

Enjoy,

Thanks Steve!

Too early to wake the neighbors, but I will give em a go later today !

Worked for me..just quietly for now.

They seem really bass heavy to me, like Mark's patches. Must be my JB loaded Les Paul.

I didn't do this, but you might try....... right click....... save file as

GITTarzann is right, guys. You have to right click the links and "Save As..." to your hard drive and then load them into your Axe-FX (as I said in my rambling post :D ). You can't just click them directly...

Could be - but these are live loud patches, not for direct - I didn't tweak them direct with the cab sim. I assume your using a power amp and cabs - they do sound way different at bedroom volume through my amp/cabs though...

They don't sound bassy through my rig when I crank 'em through a power amp. In fact, I reduced a lot of bass in the amp sim, I believe, because I noticed the original patches had a lot more bass than I wanted. Make sure you turn the cab sims off globally when using these through your power amp and cab. I tweaked these patches using my blood spatter Charvel, which has a Duncan Custom 5 in it and my Suhr Guthrie, which has a Suhr SSH+ in the bridge... As always, YMMV, so tweak 'em how you want!
