Think country type bends. Page used one in the later Zep years.

It is a B Bender. Used on tele's to give it a steel guitar effect. It is a mechanical gadget usually activated by the pulling down the guitar with the strap on. The strap peg is attached to a lever that bends the B or sometimes the g string.

For country type pedal steel licks, dude. Bends the B string up a whole tone to C#....there's a bunch of different kinds and some that do two or more strings at once. Hit B Bender on YouTube for some cool vids on it.

If you're thinking about buying the guitar, you don't have to use it.

Ignore steinmetzify, it's just a fancy-assed string stretcher for when the B gets caught in the nut slot. It was originally the prototype for the first wonderbar, later perfected by stienberger in the transtrem. There were several patent violations with both bigsby and a blues player named Blind Cucumber Johnson (the originator of the behind-the-nut index finger bend technique) that were resolved in a lobster knife fight in the early 1930's.

I can't believe you brought that up. Gramma is still pissed about the lobsters.
