What can you tell me about Fane speakers?

About the only thing a really know about Fane is they are associated with the HiWatt sound so I never really gave them much thought. Then I got to watching some of @the other John Browne videos and the Fanes were sounding damn good. I think I want to get some, but not sure what to start with.

What can you tell me about the different models/how would you compare their tones?
Do they handle high gain (think thrash metal) well?
Are they good with Marshall and/or Mesa amps?
Do any models pair well together in a mix?
I see Weber has their version (Thames). How do they compare?
Anyone play the Weber Thames 15"?

My (Fryette) Sound City 4x12 came stock with "Sound City Power" Fanes

Never used any other ones but the cab is incredible and works great for any style IMO

I've only tried Fane f70g which is Fryette version of f70. My favorite speaker until I tried EVM. Plenty mids, tight bass, ear pleasing highs.

I have a Fane M65 in my DSL40 combo. It really makes the midrange have a nice feel to it. Tight bass, extra mids, and a smoother top end.

This model says it is 'Vintage British' and it goes well with Brit flavored amps.

I will check my emails and see what Dave from Avatar/Fane recommended to pair with it - but I believe he said to pair it with an AV75 if you wanted to mix it.


Makes sense as the 75 has lots of bottom and top with a clear midrange and the 65 is more mid focused with a subdued top and bottom.

back in the day, before racks, I had a Univox amp with a 2x12 cab, that I traded and upgraded to a Sound City 120 amp and Sound City 4x12 cab when i couldn't afford a Marshall. I know it had Fane speakers. I remember it being very clean, without breakup. I used a few pedals with it, probably a Boss SD-1, MXR Distortion+ and Micro Amp.

My memory is a little off, this was probably around '80 '81, I had a Sunn Beta Lead in there somewhere, maybe before the UniVox?, the Sunn wasn't loud enough. I eventually got a used Marshall JMP 50 and used it with this Sound City cab somewhere in the early/mid 80s IIRC. Eventually I had an ART SGX 2000 and X-15 MIDI floorboard with a Crown power amp, into the Sound City cab, before / while building my full ADA rig.

I took the train from New Haven, CT to NYC; Manny's was the only place that had the new ART SGX 2000 and X-15 in stock.

(some of this may be out of order, and incorrect dates, and missing some other gear but I was constantly looking for upgrades and trades at local music stores; Daddy's Junky Music became a goldmine for used gear and trades when I had little money...I purchased my full ADA guitar and bass rigs, and more, from Ed Roman at East Coast Music Mall in Danbury, CT.

The Other John Brown has a few good videos on Fanes. Also one comparing the Fryette F70G vs the regular F70. Avatar sells them at good prices. Somewhere I read the Fryette will sell you their F70G if you email them.

The Fryette PLIR and GPDI IR have IRs loaded of the F70G. I'm tempted to buy a Deliverance cab with them. As for my F70G IRs, they sound just slightly scooped with a less harsh high end as a V30. Similar to the Marshall "G12 Vintage".

Ive got a set of the Fanes F70G's for sale. I havent posted here yet but will do it now. The F70gs you can only get with the Fryette cabs, they are not sold individually. I just pulled them from my new Fatbottom. I have 3 fryette cabs all with these fanes they are my favorite, but went a different direction with 1 cab to use the new Karnivores.

I have the F70 from Avatar as one speaker in my mutt Marshall cab and it’s become a go to for recording. Seems to tame sizzly amps and has a nice midrange voice. It works for me whether I’m using a vintage type of sound or more modern heavy.

Tried a bunch of Fanes. The words that come to mind are smooth and clear. Warm but not muddy , leaning towards American less British. In general not as aggressive as Celestion speakers.

I used to have a mid-70s Hiwatt 4x12 that had the purple back 50w Fanes in it. I don't know if it was the speakers or the port on the back panel, but that cab loved every amp I tried through it.
Unfortunately, I had to sell it as a pair with the Hiwatt head.

Fane f70s are sexy as shit. I absolutely love them. I would have to go back to back to redbacks to know which one I think is the best ever created

I've really liked every Fane I've tried so far. The F25 is my favourite tonally and it's probably in my top 3 or 4 all time faves but I'd take anyone from their F series. The Fryette OEM F70G sounds glorious too but it's really hard to get outside of a Fryette or Sound City cab.

Modern Fanes are nothing like the vintage Fanes associated with Hiwatts. First off the OG's are cast frame speakers, and ime you will never get a stamped/pressed frame speaker to match that sound. There's an immediacy, clarity, and punch that just can't be matched by a less robust design.

If that's really the sound you want, then these guys are the only game in town right now.

I had one of those also, best cab I have ever played through. Moved serious air and massaged your feet through the floor with some volume.

I have a '72 SE412 with three of the stock Purples, and a replacement with a blue label and an aluminum dust cap, but the same cast frame and cone code dated to '93. It's in the bottom right, so at least the aluminum cap doesn't send that high treble content beaming at you. I might eventually send it out to get the aluminum cap replaced.

I've also got two vintagd Pulsonic coned cast frame Fanes with a 25 watt 55hz and 20 watt 75hz POP model.
