Something to go in front of an 800 for killer gain?

The other guitarist in my band is rocking a JCM 800 unmodded. He has always used a Boss OD1 but prior to this band he's mostly played rock / thrashy stuff and now he is in need of a little more juice because we are playing death metal. His OD1 bit the dust this week so now he is in the market for an new pedal. He doesn't wanna go with the Boss DS pedals or the Metalzone etc etc. I think he is leaning towards a beefed up tube screamer or something along those lines. He likes my protone deadhorse but it's out of his price range.

Can you guys recommend some OD/TS/distortion pedals that can be had for $50-80 used and if you personally have any forsale, inbox me an offer and I can see what he has to spend.

SD1 or OD808, though I'm not sure you quickly can find an OD808 in your price range. Also try just stacking a boost pedal with his current OD (I sometimes use both a CAR Booster and an SD1 if I want all out metal).

Maxon OD808 in front of my 2203 does work very well. Pummeling palm-mutes, harmonics galore, instant metal mayhem.

On the cheaper side, maybe a Zoom PD-01 Power Drive. Does the job too and much cheaper !

IMO Maxon OD 808 is absolutely the way to go. It is very simple and one of the best OD's out there IMO.

I had an Ibanez TS808 reissue until I A/B'd with the Maxon. Maxon destroyed it by far. I play metal and use VHT amps. Other amps could differ but the Maxon is great.

I bought the Maxon OD808X and it was more of a distortion pedal and the regular 808 was much better for what you want (and for what I want)

There are other options but to me, the Maxon is the standard and what all other OD's should be compared to.

I just got a VFE The Scream OD and it is pretty awesome, lots of options and way more gain than the Maxon but I am honestly still wanting another Maxon 808 (bought mine used and it shit the bed)

Strongly recommend it and I do not think he will be disappointed. It is also very cheap for an OD.

Check out this link http://www.maxonfx.com/tone-king-201409 ... ng-special

$99 new. The sale has since expired however it still appears to work. Lets you add it to the cart and go to checkout and eveything. I have not tried it so idk if it will go through but it looks like it will.

If it doesn't work you can find them used in the $70-$90 range all the time.

Double boost it. 45$ joyo ultimate drive, and 20$ danelectro eq pedal. Very transparent and I've had wampler, full tone, analogman etc. These 2 combined are best for me. Ymmv.

Never tried this however it gives me another idea.

If his amp has an effects loop. He definitely needs an MXR 10 band EQ in the loop.

Seriously.

I would get that before the Overdrive any day of the week. HUGE boost, gives a little extra gain and volume as well if needed and obviously has the tone shaping of an eq.

I have both the EQ in the loop and the OD in front and do like both but if I had to choose just one it would be the EQ.

I saw one sell on here for $60 this week. Not sure if it had the power supply or not but I paid $80 for mine with the power supply.

The mxr eq I had was noisy...on a whim I bought the cheap danelectro, figured for 20? What the hell..right? It blew the mxr away at least with transparency. It has a smaller range than a boss or mxr but that lends to subtler changes when re shaping the tone. I have a boss geq and still the danelectro wins. The switch will fail eventually but hell they're 20 bucks...

My jmp 2204 is stock so these are in front, no loop for me...

Indeed, I need a noise gate now because of the MXR eq.

Cannot argue there it definitely will bring the hiss.

Do you have the Fish and Chips?

I would like to check that out and compare. I try to buy nice gear, I can't afford the super high end stuff but try to get something nice.

However I am not a snob and would rock a $20 eq, sell mine and get $60 back in a heartbeat if it sounded better.

Either way as far as the OP I guess we can both agree that any kind of EQ in the loop is a huge benefit?

Edit: AHHH I see you just posted the same time as me.

With my amp (Ultra-Lead) There is a huge difference between eq in front and eq in the loop.

Yup the fish n chips. Like I said, the switch is cheap so if you gig a lot you might buy one every 2 years. But compared to the boss or mxr its very quiet and transparent. And cheap lol..

And yes if you have a loop try an eq pedal....I used to use one in front AND in the loop of a modded 800. Worked great.

Definitely worth checking out for the price and you are not the first person to mention that EQ to me.

I bought the MXR because literally 97% of the people I spoke with swore the MXR was the absolute best EQ on the market hands down.

Anyway to the OP sorry to derail but I think it relates.

Have your guy get a $20 Fish and Chips. If he has a loop, toss it in and stay away from his boner. He will love it and that may give him more time to save $$$ for the OD pedal that he wants.

Seriously, this one is a no brainer. DOUBLE BOOST / end thread.

Equalizer in the loop or after the OD, that will give him more than enough. Think of how all those old classic sounds came to be. People got creative and they got results. Oh, and dial back the mid knob on the marshall, scoop it up!

The Joyo Ultimate Drive completely kicks @$$..... If you look around the web you can find all of the Joyo pedals for around $30 new. They have several that would do what you want.

They do...joyo stuff is really transparent and if you'd rather put your cash into guitars/amps you gotta save in other spots lol...I've used this combo in front of everything I boost..jubilee, slo, jmp/jcm and its the best to my ears. Slo I only had the eq turned on but it was awesome. Like Kapo said, turn the mids back a bit on the Marshall and slam them back with the eq pedal...mine has a low end bump up, flat and mids back up again. Love it.
