Speaker Cab Woes

I know you are very competent when it comes to soldering...but I know with how thick the wiring is, it is possible for your voice coil to become a heat sink IIRC.

That could be it. Too much heat fucks up the speaker like Ray Rice and his wife?

Too soon?

Don't laugh, you're in the Bay and our niners aren't doing so well lately on the personal side of things. :aww:

But how does a frame get bent to the point where you could see it on a flat surface... if the surface you mount the speaker to (the baffle) is flat to begin with?

When the speaker is screwed to the baffle, the screws will cause the basket to conform to the baffle. However if you take the speaker out and let it sit freely on a flat surface, you can see if the basket is actually bent. But you'd have to really crank down the screws to cause this issue.

Well if the baffle is flat... and the screws cause the speaker basket to conform to a flat surface... how is the basket going to get warped? Flat = flat. I can see the screws bending the area around where their heads touch to the basket. like a little dimple. But I think what folks are saying is it causes the basket to go out of round? But my point was that the baffle is flat to begin with. So how would that happen? I must be missing something.

The "face" of the speaker frame = flat.

The surface of the baffle = flat.

How would mating those two equally flat surfaces together cause one of those surfaces to go out of round?

I'm not saying it can't happen. I'm just trying to figure out this scenario in my head. :)

You have a gasket on the frame between it and the baffle board. Depending on it's thickness and how tight you make the bolts, you can bend it at those points from 1/16" to 3/16".

And you only need to really tweak on mounting bolt to pull the bolt hole down, which then pulls the cone down, which is attached to the voice coil...when can then be pulled oblong or sideways.

Of course you can have a warped baffle board, too, causing the same problem.

Gotchya. I understand now, thanks :)

I think Greenbacks suck for high gain.

Well to me, this is "high-gain." I don't play any down-tuned 8-string stuff. Anyway, this vid was with the Greenback-loaded cab in question before I swapped out the speakers for 65s.

Yeah, I miss that amp. You still have it? I'm thinking about building one.
