Splawn Quick Rod - educate me

Im a splawn fan and i owned a few quickrods and i think they are nice amps for the money, well built and with the right speaker they sound awsome, i had the 3 pre and i have a 2010 currently and i like the new version the best, i also have a nitro with kt88 that i like even better than my quickrod. lately i been seeing quickrods used for 1200 to 1400 and at those prices they are hard to beat.
theres alot of other amps out there that cover the same ground as the splawns like fortin, cameron, friedman but i havent seen any used in the 1200 to 1400 range that i see the splawns for, also the fortins, camerons and friedmans cost alot more new when you consider a new qr is about 1900 new. the bones with a loop cost 2725 and the natas is even more, i guess you can look for a friedman but they are 3k and then theres the camerons.
any of them are great but its how much you wanna spend and how long you wanna wait. marshalls are nice but a new 2203x or jvm is about the same price as a splawn.

All I know is everyone sounds great through them except me. I could not get my Competition to sound anything like the vid/clips I heard. I am hearing good things about the Nitro.

From your description, the QR sounds like it would be right up your alley. I have a newer version and there is nothing weird about the mids. The Chinese pre's and power tubes sound great in the amp also. The other guitar player in my band loves the QR because it does the hot-rodded Marshall tone very well, plus it has a good clean channel and the solo boost is a nice feature. It is not my favorite amp for playing heavy stuff but it does get pretty wicked with a boost.

Tone is in the fingers.

Randy....You can come on over and play mine anytime. We can even crank it. Some days I find it to have too much bass, but i think this is cuz I am running a 2x12 on the ground. I just got some Ernie Ball casters today, and plan on putting them on this evening. Get it up off the carpet, plus help the back. This thing is damn heavy.

Come on by and crank it up.

Then sell your Quick Rod for $1200 and buy a DSL for $700 and you've made some cash. I mean, the amp has nothing to do with it right?

I love my Quick Rod but I know where lots of people are coming from.

Some players want gain, more gain and then hopefully a boost to get some more gain so they can get some saturation and then more saturation and then double the saturation. They like to be able to plug their guitar into their amp, set the guitar on a stand, walk back 10 steps and then look at the fingerboard and the note they are looking at plays and doesn't stop sustaining until there is a brown out in their building or lightning hits their house and knocks the power out. If they even think about doing a particular lick or run and hit 17% of the notes cleanly, it's ok, the amp will fill in the blanks.

The Quick Rod is not like that. The Quick Rod is not your friend. The Quick Rod is not charitable or giving. The Quick Rod is willing to do it's work, but not willing to do your work. It's not going to cover for you like some googly eyed co-worker with a crush when you didn't get your work done. JUST LIKE EVERY REAL MARSHALL EVER MADE. The Quick Rod is like the bully down the street. Stand up to him. Show him you are ready to scrap and you guys will become fast friends. Or, if you're a wuss like me, plug your guitar into a boost pedal and then into the Quick Rod, but don't let the Quick Rod see it or the heckling will be unmerciful.

Seriously though, the Quick Rod does have a lot of detractors and I do know where they are coming from. We are in an age of killer modded Marshalls (that don't sound like Marshalls to me) and high gain monster amps, but for me, most of those amps miss the mark. They are a freaking BLAST to play and my right hand can take a vacation from picking but I don't like the way I play on amps like that. And I don't like the way they record. They get lost in mixes or don't have the articulation or percussive quality when you palm mute. But that's for me and my ears and my playing style.

When someone gets a Quick Rod from me, most of the time they love it, but more than a few have been like WHAT IS THIS? I understand them because it's a higher percentage that I'd like it to be but it's no where near what it was like when I was a Mojave dealer when about 95% of the people were like "WHERE'S THE EVH IN HERE? I CAN'T FIND THE EVH! I WANT THE EVH!".

I would sell all my amps and buy something modest because I truly believe that tone is in the fingers... well at least 80% of it is. But then, I'd lose my street-creds around here... I couldn't bear the thought of that... :(

:D i want one .. i always liked an amp thats clean, and doesnt have alot of background going on till fill in and mask

Curt.....Great post! Had me laughin...  I think the one little quote you posted was right on about recording....I agree 100%. I was thinking about this Saturday when I was doing some recording. The QR records easy as pie for me....Where it seems that other amps i have owned in the past I always have trouble. Seriously....I pretty much just throw a mic anywhere on my splawn cab and it records good. I love that!

But from my experiences Fortin, Friedman's, and Camerons are a step above the Quick Rod for a modded Marshall tone, for me. YMMV.

I may get crucified on here for this but my Quick Rod is enroute to Fiedman as of yesterday.

Why get crucified? Getting boutiques modded by other boutique/modders is nothing new these days.

Is he going to de-weird the midrange and make the amp less of a "bully" you have to conquer?
