Looking at the evh3 big time. Why cuz Eric Peterson from testaments tone fkn rules. Yet I have a couple buddies twisting my arm to get a quick rod 2012. Say more gain more sat?
I had 4 nitros never again. I listened to ola videos on quick rod n nitro. The quick rod sounds really tasty. Nitro sounds like when I had it. His video of the evh5153 is pretty killer as well as some sick clips I've heard. Eric tone was great live w testament twice both using the evh3.

Thoughts rigtalkers ?

I have a 5150 III 50w and it's stomped out GAS for anything else... except Splawn, mostly the Nitro/50w 1-channel version. I haven't played them myself though, so I'm not really any help.

I've owned them both, and I think you'll be happier with 5153.

I haven't played the Slpawn, but I can say my EVH 100w makes me smile every time I plug in. I seriously feel no need for any other amps with this thing.

5153

I`ve had both, still have the EVH. More versatile, aggressive and has 3 channels witch all sound great.

The Splawn to me was very high endy and mids are very pronounced witch can be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences. I couldn`t gel with it.

I`m getting the 50 watts soon to for my upstairs lounge area. I`ll be pairing it with a TC Nova System with MIDI capabilities, sweet little setup.

I too love Eric`s tones and i can get them with the EVH, it gets the brutals done.

Can't comment on the splawn but man I love my 5153. Just a killer amp with rich harmonics and pretty versatile.

Splawn won't hide your mistakes. The EVH amps have a "fizzy" lack of clarity and string-to-String definition. My vote is for the Quick Rod, and the new version kicks just as much butt as the older ones -- the new transformers add a new dimension to the amp that you just have to hear.

The Splawn sounds good at first, but there's a fizzyness to the distortion that gets fatiguing to listen to, IME.

Anyone play evh next to a Diezel ? Hagen?

I've got both. Hard to beat the Hagen, period. The EVH is getting new tubes now. I bought it used, the guy didn't even send me the grill stripes, and the speaker connection was not working. At the tech now, getting external bias points too so I can roll if needed. We'll see how it goes once the EVH is in actual fighting shape.

Kinda (to me) depends on what you'll be playing (mostly) when it comes to these two specific amps. If you're largely a lead/solo/shreddy type player, you may like the 5150 III a little more. If ultra tight, dry rhythm grooving is your thing, the QR is superb at that - very articulate and dynamic for chord work of all genres. Not saying either amp can't cover the 'others' thing well, of course they can...I had zero issues playing difficult solo lines with my QR for example (was a little tougher the higher up the neck you go, but a nice boost pedal for some added 'playability' cures that), just saying obviously every amp has its strengths. The newer QR's also sound incred at lower volumes due to the highly effective loop volume feature.

It's a tough call really! One of those things where it would be better to not go entirely on clips and our word but rather having each one to freely sample for a week. I'll never forget the day I got my QR home and hit that first chord on it, I couldn't wipe the sinister, shit eating grin off my face. Only sold it (3+ years later) because something better happened along and I had a week or two with it vs the Splawn. The Cameron modded amp won (much better touch sensitivity for starters, which is paramount for me). I think you need both, lol!! The QR is a great studio amp. Lay down your metal/rock crunch rhythms with the Splawn and find something of a different, warmer/touchy flavor to drop the solos over that with! Good luck!!!

Right on  The QR with a Koko boost sounds and plays awesome.

I had both and liked the 5153 better, i liked the feel and voicing of the mids better, i sold the qr and nitro and currently have the 5153. I have no plans on getting another splawn even though i think they are nice amps.

Splawn = love/hate amp ?

Evh III = love/hate amp ?

I don't think splawn will get Eric petersons tone. Ive owned 4 nitros n borrowed to diff quickrods.

I really wonder how it diffes from Hagen?

Ask Chubtone he owns a QR and sells both EVH and Splawn amps. He could give you more info.

I own a QR and have spent some time with the Hagan, PM me if you want me to describe in depth to you.

I've owned several Splawns over the years -- at present I have the Streetrod which sounds very similar to the Quickrod. I just got the EVH III 50W last week and have been A/B ing them.
At about half the cost, the EVH is the best bang for the buck. Although it has 3 channels, a lot of people only consider it a 2 channel amp (the combined tone and drive controls on channels 1 & 2 are a limiting factor). The Splawn has a Solo boost with a separate volume control and a gain boost. So, while the features are a little different between the amps, I’d consider them equally versatile. The EVH has more gain and saturation on both channels 2 and 3. Compared to the Splawn, the EVH tone is brighter and sharper – has more of a natural mid-cut, whereas Splawns generally emphasize stronger mids. The Splawn is warmer and sounds a little bigger/fuller than the EVH. I have not tried the EVH in a band setting yet – I’m a little concerned that it may sound thin. The resonance knob on the back of the EVH is very important to bass response and helps considerably. Both amps seem to do mid gain sounds very well. Splawns are dead quiet, while the EVH gets a little noisy with the gain cranked. Overall, I feel like the Splawn is better suited to traditional / vintage Marshall tones while the EVH strikes me as a more modern sounding amp. Both amps seem well built, but I think the Splawn is a better made piece of gear with higher end components (but you pay for that when you buy the amp). With Splawn, you won’t get better customer service from any amp maker. I can also tell you from experience, that Splawns are durable and have held up well – maybe the EVH will also, I just don’t have evidence of that yet.
It’s a difficult decision. On overall build quality, customer service, and fidelity - I’d say Splawn wins. On value, EVH wins (but on value for $2K hand assembled USA-made amps, Splawn wins). On features, it’s a tie. The big factor – is personal preference regarding tone and the specific features themselves. For a versatile high gain amp at $1K – the EVH is probably one of the best things out there. Beyond that price point, for a strong high quality and feature rich Marshall-inspired amp, I’d get a Splawn.

Another thing I noticed about my QR was how fast the attack was. I've owned over 50 amps, and I've never had an amp with such a fast attack.

I've had both of them for over 4 years and depending on mood, I go either way. I love the EVH's red channel more than any other channel of any other amp I have. Its just got some mojo/voodoo/spiritual vibe to it.

Depends on the budget, and for me, the Splawn is the best hot-rod marshall type out there and then EVH more modern in its voicing and is a little spongy at times. The string to string definition while chording is better on the Splawn, and with a little volume knob trickery the Splawn becomes that much more versatile. I'm blessed in that I've not only got both, but I've also got a CAE OD-100+.

Are you able to demo either?
