Splawn quickrod or EVH 5153 .... N why ?

I own both and have to say the QR is the superior amp imo. It has a much cleaner and smoother tone to my ears. The 5150III at first was like "wow!!" but after playing for long periods it really tends to make my ears hurt. Its fun to play because it has gobs of saturation...something that the splawn lacks. The 5150III also does not cut in a band mix as well as the splawn nor does it have the dynamics and/or the pick attack like the QR. It also doesnt clean up as smoothly as the Splawn when rolling back the volume.

I also have a Peavey 5150 that I prefer over the 5150III. The PV also has a smoother less raspy tone as the III. Maybe I havent given the III enough playing time with the band. It seems to just not project in a jam setting compared to my PV 5150 or my QR. It doesnt sound horrible but it has a certain nasally squishy saturated tone that just doest cut even though it has plenty of treble and presence

To sum it up I see it like this...

Splawn = clean gain, punch and clarity..DRY = fight your amp if your chops aint up to par :aww:

5150 III = punchy, saturated preamp gain 'distortion', high end 'fizz', nasally and a bit mushy = hide all your sloppy playing. Youre a rock star ;)

Sounds as if I hate the III but I really dont. It is a fun fun amp to play. I just need to find a variety of pre tubes to throw in it to tame some of the tones my ears dont like about it

I think its amazing how you can read many reviews for the same amp and have such polarizing opinions. Too many variables.

Example is the PV 5150 to me is way too harsh and the EVH (channel 2) being much smoother. The EVH is much easier on my ears.

I know I'm not making comments on the QR (as what this thread is about) but it just goes to show that the ONLY way to really know if an amp is for you is to try them out for yourself. Just when you do, be sure to work with channel 2 of the EVH and don't blow by it like most do when sound testing.

^^^ This, How can you take someone's opinion on tone.....Try them out for yourself and pick the one that feels and sounds the best

^^^^ totally agree with you guys. Everyone's ears are different. Different cabs, speakers, guitars, pickups. There are so many variables to consider....plus the type of music you play, the tuning you play in etc...

I had a 3 pre and a 2010 model and my new 2012 sounds better than all i had..... Scott told me it is his best work to date

I have an '05 and '10 QR and the tonal differences are very subtle. The '10 has a touch more saturation, loop MV and the gear switching option, but mine came with the standard 3 button FS so :dunno: Would like to check out the 2012 version though.

Had a 5150III to demo for a weekend and didn't really gel with it. But in all fairness, it was only a couple of days and I didn't do much tweaking. It's got three useable channels, but none that stood out as exceptional for me. Like others have said... lot's of saturation and not much articulation. I had a 6505+ and felt that was stronger than the 5150III.

For modern metal, I'd definitely go Peavey if that's your option.
For hard rock/classic metal, the Splawn delivers in spades.

Ive got a 2011 QR and mine can get pretty Damn heavy! Then again my marshall DSL can get pretty heavy as well but I like my tone very clear and not smeared with gain.

Hiding behind gain comments is half assed bragging imo, if you don't want to hide then don't use any gain at all. Play unplugged, acoustic guitar, or totally clean to not hide.

Bragging???
Big difference between gain at 1:00 and none at all.

What I was trying to convey is any gain at all is a coloring/crutch. Taking the position of saturated gain as hiding is a half truth imo and yes some do employ it for that purpose obviously. If you want to go down that road then don't play with any gain at all and show your true transparency to the world.

I apologize if you felt offended by my choice of words. I'm open to further commentary if you choose to elaborate further? :)

I like my 5153 better than any of my 6505 i ever owned.
Different amps but some people still compare them.
