Damn just played the quick rod for an hour. Killer f'n amp!

Is it really "touchy" or "sensitive"...I keep reading that it is a very unforgiving amp. I don't mind to an extent, but I don't want something that is just crazy hard to play with.

Great clip.

Never played a Nitro but I was reading somewhere, maybe here, that for drop tunings the Quick Rod may actually be better due to all the inherent low end already present in the Nitro.

Also keep in mind, that a huge portion of the Nitro's are running KT88s, where a huge portion of the Quick Rods are running EL34s. QR can run KT88s too if that is your thing but you'll need to a 'simple' mod.
A qr with kt88 wont sound the same as the nitro, i owned a promod and its just a qr with kt88 and i feel its closer to the qr tone than the nitro tone. I really like the qr and promod but my favorite splawn is the nitro.
Oh yeah. I didn't mean to imply that it did. Putting KT88s in a Quick Rod does not make it a Nitro. I was just saying with the inherent low end of a Nitro coupled with the enhanced lower end of a KT88 and it 'COULD' be too much for some.

PS: I know you from the Splawn boards I just can't put my finger on it.

Edit: yeah I played some shit in Drop C last night and it had such saturation AND thickness I about passed out.

My bad, i misenderstood what you said.

You might know me as zao on the splawn boards.

For years i didnt wanna try a nitro with kt88 because i thought the lows was gonna be too overpowering and i even ordered my first nitro with el34, after owning both i do not like it with el34 and the kt88 sound better to me, seems like the kt88 matchup better and it didnt overpower the lows like i thought, for modern stuff i love the nitro over the qr because of the lower mid growl and and more saturated gain, the qr is nice and can do heavy stuff but its not the same as the nitro and thats why i sold it, i had both at the same time for 6 months.

Promod with 6550s :D Best in between to me. Has the nice low stuff like the Nitro but retains the QR kinda tone...if that makes sense.

Didnt like the Splawn amps with the KT88s...sounded odd to me. Not as musical as the 6550s or even some KT77s

They are two different flavors of modern metal:

Get both

Yes the amp gives what you put in. Even at maximum gain settings there is nothing to hide behind.

I for one prefer revealing amps, though annoying at first they make you a better player and translate more nuance to the audience.

I wouldn't call any amp that is revealing hard to play with just honest so to speak. It will exactly display the player you re for better or for worse.

And, yeah - they are hella articulate amps. I have a long way to go still but I know my amp has made me a better player.

it definitely made me a better player, and it's actually made me use less gain on ALL amps now. I just loved the clarity it gave... I miss it.

I started out on the amp using Gear 3 and gain around 3:00, by the time I got really comfortable with it, I found the best tone to be on Gear 2 with the gain at ~1:00, and this went for lead and rhythm tones (but mostly lead :D)

I have both. KT88 Nitro for modern metal, EL34 QR for classic/modern rock.

Go forth, and burn my son...

I would totally agree with that, I had my quick rod modified by the splawn guys to pro mod specs with 6550s in it & had a buddy of mine locally do a side by side with is pro mod with the kt88s. The 88s just didn't sound natural, they sounded like they were forcing low end where there wasn't any available. The 6550s just had low for days, but the amp was much stiffer, so when I played cruddy...the world knew about it ;)

I have a QR, Nitro and a modded 6505+.

For the money ? 6505+. Easy to dial in, way better for modern tones than a QR and way,way cheaper. Splawns are funny birds so you need to factor in speakers on your purchase list as well. The 6505+ can be found used for $500 pretty easily. They are easy to dial in and I honestly can get better sustain and therefore lead tones out of the 6505+.

For the money I'd have to vote 6505+. If money is not the biggest issue than the Nitro. The QR..... I admire guys who can play metal with it as I cannot.

Yea I'm on a budget right now cause I'm still looking for work so I'm gonna wind up most likely getting a used nice condition Line 6 HD147 & Floorboard (it has the 5150 II amp model on it already) and then later on, when I get some money saved up get a 6505+ head & footswitch and keep the HD147 for backup.

I have all three amps and I'm on the eastside of Cleveland. Try them all out sometime if you'd like.

Quickrod. Its much more versatile...and with a resistor & tube change you can get it to a diff level as a Promod. I had both...Nitro was cool...just something about it didnt jive with me. But the QR/PM was def awesome. Loved it with 6550s...really sounded sweet!

I think the QR gets plenty heavy. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for metal.

See now I thought i needed a nitro but wound up with a quckrod. With a boost the quick rod get plenty heavy, heavier than i expected.

I say choose by flavor.

You either want lots of saturation and a low mid focus nitro, OR less saturation but still enough and more of a high mid focus.
High mid for the win!

^If you ask, Splawn will make you a Nitro, but with the mids of a QR.

I ordered a Splawn Street Rod head which is basically a smaller Quick Rod and also having compared the Quick Rod to a Nitro, and also in clips, the Quickrod sounds thicker to me. Both will handle any style without an external boost.

I wonder which would be better to compliment a 5150 III ran/recorded in stereo, one panned 100% left and the other 100% right?
