Splawn Quickrod or Nitro For Modern Metal?

I modded my Nitro to KT88's for a while and there was SO much gain on tap and the sound just CRUSHED!!! I put it up against Mesa, Marshall, Blackstar, Solano... It crushed them all!! The only amp to even come close to hanging with it was the 6550-equipped Diezel VH4 (which has now been reverted to EL34'S).

I say if it's modern metal you're after and maximum flexibility, get an EL34B - equipped Splawn Nitro and see how you like. If not heavy enough, do the KT88 mod and go that route. If neither of those tones get you where you want to be, don't know what to tell you. The KT88 Nitro is in the top three modern metal amps I've ever heard, and if you look at my past posts, I've owned or had extensive play time on a great deal of the. "modern metal" amps out there.

PM me if you'd like to discuss further. Splawn is truly some of the best gear for the money on the market today.

Hope this helps!!!

I have a 2009 Quick Rod coming on Friday with the loop volume. It's got a Boa headshell which I don't love but it's in pristine condish. Can't wait to get it.

Is "modern metal" music the dropped C/B tuned stuff with no leads, and "cookie monster" vocals?

Quick Rod or Street Rod do metal easily butt it depends what you consider as metal?
I no longer play metal but I do play some heavier or hard rock material like Alice in Chains or Tool....but not any heavier than that. And I no longer play any classic metal or anything fast. So, for me, the Quick Rod does it all. The Nitro has a lot of bass and more low mids like a Bogner XTC. However, at a friends studio, I preferred his Mesa Electradyne which also has lots of low end and low mids like the Nitro, but is warmer and more organic and can still cover things like Metallica to AIC or Tool, if I need it.

Check out the LA amp fest on YouTube and one section they play the Nitro and Quickrod back to back and the Quickrod I thougts sounded much better, thicker, more body.

I have all three amps and I'm on the eastside of Cleveland. Try them all out sometime if you'd like.

I'd love to try a nitro in person sometime. Open invite? lol

I know I'm bumping an older thread I posted but I can't stop thinking about the Splawn Quickrod, AARRGGHH!! There was some guy on the local craigslist by me a while back that had a Splawn Nitro for $1,200.00!!! I had already bought a Peavey 6505+ head which I still have right now but I'm thinking of selling it to get a Splawn QR but I don't know pricewise if I could get a QR for $1,200 or less, I have to kinda watch my funds still

Either will do metal very well and you can keep your od pedals for the rectumfrier rig. I play a Nitro with en EMG equipped guitar and no fx. Zero problems being tight and mean.

Since you're from Akron you should go see Inhale/Exhale. John Larussa plays a Pro Mod. I had talked to him after a show for a bit he played here in Columbus. Totally nice guy and was willing to talk gear. What guitarist isn't right? His Pro Mod through an Orange PPC412 was freaking brutal.

I have a Nitro and it's the only Splawn I have played so my frame of reference isn't as wide as some, but with the right cab it does modern metal very well.

Dude that tremoverb with a boost should give you modern metal all day...

Just got done re-tubing the tremoverb a little bit ago and no there is no sound coming out of it??!! :( Problem with the Tremoverb is I can't really use it at shows unless it's a big show where it can be opened up, anytime I've tried using it at shows sound guys bitch about it, can't even turn it on 1 and the sound guys bitch saying it's too loud and for that amp to even sound good it's gotta be turned up. Now after this happenening tonight I'm getting nervous about the reliability because I already had all the factory updates done LDR's, etc. a while back

This problem is why I own Friedman/Cameron modded amps (I am certain other modders have similar master volume circuits). I play in small bars, high school auditoriums, and everything in between. It's hard to have good tone in church and an outdoor festival with the same amp. I never get told to turn down, its just the opposite, I get asked to turn up

Having an amp that covers this much ground will cost you $1,500 and up but once you have one like this you will never go back. I owned a stock JVM 410 for 2 years in 2007 - 2009, and was very happy with it. I have another one right now and it sounds terrible compared to the Friedman modded Marshall I bought from LP Freak 3 years ago. :rawk: :rawk:

Best of luck to you!

Im in Willoughby just off of route 2.

Anyone ever in the LA area ever wants to check out a Quick Rod or Nitro hit me up and give me some notice and we'll see what we can do. I've done impromptu demos for Splawn before as I believe that strongly in the product. I've even leant my older Quick Rod to Michael Sweet of Stryper when he had two local gigs to do but his ordered Splawns weren't ready yet. Check YT for Stryper Canyon Club Calling on You and you'll see my Quick Rod on top of his Marshall cabs. The JCM900 was rented and not hooked up, only there as a backup. That's the Quick Rod in First Gear.
