I picked up a 1973 Super Lead today for a buddy since I was close to the seller's location. The seller had owned it since 1980. He bought it with the MV installed in one of the extra speaker jacks. Otherwise it's stock. I haven't opened it but I saw gut shots and it's good to go. It has a 5000pf cap on volume pot and no cathode bypass cap on v2a. I had to plug it in to see how it sounded. I was impressed at the sound for just a MV mod.

I used a Les Paul with BKP Cold Sweat pickup. I hit a mini Tube Screamer about 20 seconds in for a bit. This is super low bedroom volume. Not bad! I'm sure it will get even more brightness and bite with the volume turned up some more.

Sounds nice! But, that just tells me that It'll be even better once that MV is ripped out....

Of course, if that's what the owner wants. There's just nothing like the real deal roar of a NMV Marshall, pedal included or not.

Yeah owner wants to keep it as is for now. I should try to make a louder clip. This was just a quick one I made to send to him to show him how it sounds.

A v2a bypass cap would bump the gain a good amount and add some grind.

v2a is the 820? usually stock isn’t bypassed
Yeah it’s the 820. I’ve seen them both ways from Marshall. You know how it is with them. Just random how they did things.

I thought it was 71 or 72 when Marshalls got more “aggressive.” 100k NFB resistors and .68uF on v2a were supposedly why.

The original board for my 74 was robbed, all I have is what I believe to be an early 80s board. Mine didn’t come with anything across the 820.

They used 0.68uF? Interesting
