I don't like Gibson's for articulate, intricate sounding lines or riffs. To me they are a big, burly, wall of sound sort of thing. They are unbeatable, for big, power chord type riffs or big notes on the lower strings sort of riffs. They also sound cool for legato-y, fat, bendy, sustainy lead lines.

I think a Les Paul is Shaquille O'Neal and a strat is a willowy, whispy, touch 3 point shooter. they are both going to get you 30 points a game (in their prime) they are just going to do it in different ways.

Now a super strat? That's Kobe Bryant. It'll pop from the outside with nothing but net and then throw it down in your face the next play.

I think I know where your going with that, especially on the rhythm side of things but I don't completely agree that articulate on more technically challenging runs are no good on a LP. Al DiMeola used a LP back in the day doing his intricate stuff on an LPC with creme DiMarzios. I've been a super strat guy my whole life. I recently got a LP Trad+. I can do exactly the same stuff on a LP as I do my strats on the Lester.

For open note and chordal stuff I actually think the TOM on the LP is better that my Floyded super strats.

I liked Ex-4 better when it was called "I'll See The Light Tonight" (4:58 to 5:15).

Actually -I thought this was a good analogy. Lucky he didn't go into obscure BB Players that I don't know:

" The Les Pauls with P90s are more like Rick Morton from the '76 Celtics.........."

I've never owned an LP but noticed a lot of clean but really good LP Tones lately and wonder what a H-S-H LP would be like ( I know it won't be Strat - but still would be a very articulate LP ).

Mark Reale and Sykes never had any problems shredding away on a LP, I suppose it's like anything else in the variable department...amp settings, pickups etc.

Agreed.

Sykes does rip on a Les Paul and he was one of the guys in my mind as I described the Les Pauls strengths. But to my ear, Sykes lead and rhythm tone are the epitome of what I am describing. His tone is not good for articulate sounding single note lines that have that percussive "click" to them.

Although I like articulation and definition and are a key part of my sound, I hate that piercing percussive "click" sound. It is what turns me off a lot of shred guitar music in the first place. I get bored of it really fast. It is just all "click", no real note, no warmth, no timbre.
