Dimarzio used to wind Shur pickups until recently when Suhr started to make them themselves in their new factory.

I LOVE the Suhr SSH+ & SSV & want to get a couple of set to put in my 2 new custom builds. I went to order the sets from the dealer that I've bought my last 2 Suhr Moderns from & he said that he's heard a lot of complaints that the new Suhr pickups made by Suhr aren't like the old ones made by Dimarzio & a lot of customers who liked the old Dimarzio wound ones do not like the new Suhr would ones.

Now, I have no idea what to do. This guy is a straight up honest guy & carries Suhr, Dimarzio, Duncan, EMG etc so he has no vested interest. I do not know what to do. I love my old Suhr pickups & want THAT sound, but now I'm afraid to spring for 4 new PUs that may not be the exact same as when Dimarzio was winding them.

You can email dimarzio and ask them what they sell thats close.

Hey man - for whatever it's worth, I've got all Suhr made Suhr pickups in my guitars and I love em. For whatever it's worth, I've got the SHH+ and SSV combo in a Suhr custom build and I love it to pieces.

I have 3 Suhr moderns all with Suhr PUs & love them all. That's why I want to get 4 more PUs for my 2 other none Suhr guitars. However, my Suhr guitars are a few years old & the PUs were all made by Dimarzio back then. The newer ones aren't & that's where the problem lies.

What makes you think your pickups were wound by DiMarzio? When were your guitars built? DiMarzio built the old JST pickup for suhr. All the newer pickups were wound at suhr. The JST goes back over 10 years.

You could email Suhr. They will tell you exactly what pickups you have and who wound them. But if your Moderns are only a few years old it's safe to say the exact same pickups are offered today.

The Modern range is quite new.
There's no way you have the old Dimarzio made pickups.

You're Dealer is misinformed.
Suhr always wound their own named range. They used to have paper bobbin covers when they started, and that was in the late 90s(?). I'm guessing as that's when I started experimenting with them in place of the DiMarzio made, Suhr spec, JST humbuckers. The Modern wasn't even a twitch in John's pants then.
If your pickups have shiny plastic covers, they're Suhr wound - the JST were matte finish.
If they are covered, you'll need to look on the back.

I was told that Dimarzio used to make their PUs until Suhr moved into their huge new factory a year or so ago & then everything was done in house from there.

This guy is a huge Suhr dealer & sells everything, I can't imagine he was lying or misinformed. He was just telling me what other customers had told him who had older Suhr PUs & then bought the same model as a replacement.

I'm now officially confused!!!!!

Yeah, Wolf makes a great point - the moderns are newer models and I'm sure those were the JST ones. Also, It's been well over two years, maybe bordering on 3 that they've been in the new place. I've had my standard since September of '12, and when ordering it the pickups were spec'd as JST.

Best way to figure out what you've got though is email Suhr. Their customer service is unbeatable.

Hmm....first I've heard of this. Watch the Suhr factory tour videos from a few years ago and they wind all their pickups in house.

We only used DiMarzios for humbuckers for a few years not since the last 8 years or so, We used DiMarzio Noiseless as well but since the Silent Coil system we haven't used them either and we always made our own single coils.
We even cut our own fibers for our pickups. We have 3 tanaka coil winders that are busy all day!
We are also the only maker I know of that actually uses our version of Alnico 5 which was used in the early 60's. We call it Alnico 5 "special". It has more give and a sweeter response.
