It was a mod John did to the OD100 and I think on Marshalls before the SE came out. It gave channel two of the OD100 allot more gain.

So based on johns post he can put it into the se-100 as well? would it basically make the se-100 a two channel head? Appreciate your help glip!
His post gave me the impression it would be an either or so if you wanted a higher gain version that would be it. As long as you can tame the beast

I would like that also with a good range and a good balance between pre and power amp distortion. If the higher gain version ruined the balance I would skip.

its close, the gain doesn't sound as defined as it does in the suhr clips but i think thats just difference in recording methods/mics...

like you, i own a be-100 and an OB as well, and after reading John's description and doing some research/listening to clips, can't decide whether i should get a PT-100 or the SE-100

I'm really looking forward to hearing your clips of the blackout once you get it...not looking like i'll be able to try either the PT or the SE out in person

Is it just me, or are guitars/amps that are priced at 1.500 seem cheap these days?

I bought my 1987x because... "1.399 euro.... Wow... BARGAIN!!!"

Nice. Looks great.

You could have always missed the previews and done a few quick clips, ;)

that head looks cool - is it really as tall as it looks in the pic? looks like 15" tall?

FINALLY!

That sounds pretty awesome and your gain knob is only at around 6-7. Would you ming sharing what pickups you were using and how you had set the depth control on the back?

How does it compare to some of the other high-gainers you've got (BE, OB, PT)?

I wish I could post more but totally screwed tonight watching the kids...lol.

That first clip was my Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul - Joe Perry Boneyard with a stock Burstbucker 3. I had Depth at noon. This was me in the first 20 minutes of owning the amp so will definitely put up better clips!

The second clip is the Suhr Modern Tiger with Aldrich. That was a ridiculous combination!

I'll post some thoughts on how this amp compares to the others soon.

Peace!

No worries dude, appreciate the additional info for sure. Based on the clips it sounds like its got plenty of gain and saturation. I played the SE clips side by side to your OB and BE clips and it sounds like its less raw than the BE but more defined and modern sounding than the OB. Of course the clips were recorded under different circumstances and you're playing different things. Based on what I hear, i think the PT100 might be better for me, but I'll have to wait to try an SE out myself (should be next week).

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Really, PT100? Why are you leaning that way? I had that amp for years.

Well this all comes down to trying the SE and the PT myself (happening Tuesday), but based on your clips I think adding the SE to the BE and OB (already own the 2 of these) might be overkill. It sounds fairly similar to the BE and the OB (in between the two tonewise).

Also based on what John said earlier, the PT sits in the middle of the SE and the OD in terms of how the circuit is structured. Plus the PT comes with additional channels. Were you just not a fan of the PT at all? There's apparently a new PT model coming out as well per Johns post in the suhr sub-forum.

Play the SE and the PT side by side and I can guarantee you are coming home with the SE

PT was a fine amp but I always had to slice it down with either the Shiba or Koko Boost. The voicing for me ended up being a challenge.

If you think about it, Pete Thorn used that amp to tour with Chris Cornell for Soundgarden tunes. Very rich, big chords but I was trying to play Winger on it. Lol

Ironically, Reb uses the PT but also runs a Shiba in front of it.

Didn't know ten was using a shiva in front of the PT. I hear you on the PT vs SE end, I might very well find the SE to be better than the PT but that'll have to wait till Tuesday.

Now the other question is, does it really differ that much from the BE and the OB? I'll wait to hear your thoughts on that cause it sounds fairly similar to me on your clips.

The one thing I'll say about the PT100 is that with a band, it cuts through like a knife. Sometimes that voicing you may not like in the bedroom translates well to live use and especially with more volume. I haven't been able to play out with the SE yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Regardless, all great amps and the SE is something special indeed!

The BE is not even in the same time zone as the OB or the SE in terms of sheer wall of sound gain. I feel the BE is more in line with the JVM and more standard Marshall stuff.

The OB and the SE are different. The OB lives closer to the core Marshall tone and has a sleaze factor that the SE does not have.

The SE is the Doug Aldrich tone that you can hear on the new Burning Rain CD. It also has extreme string articulation which is quote amazing to hear live in the room. If you don't like Doug Aldrich's tone then you won't like this amp.

To me the SE, sounds like a PT mod'ed to perfection with the ability to clean up.

Great description--Burning Rain to a T!
