Don't get carried away fellas, Pete sounds awesome with any amp. Great player!!

That is because he put the time in and practiced his ass off, anyone of us COULD sound like that if we put the time into it.

Tone is in the practice...........................
I have to disagree with this

Some people just have 'it'. You can practice and practice drawing a picture, but that doesnt mean you will be an "artist". Same goes with atheletics...you either have 'it' or you dont :aww:

Same goes with playing guitar. You either have 'it' or you don't ;)

People like Pete are "gifted"

I agree with this, I do not have "it"

He sure is, but I think what Scott was eluding to (correct me if I'm wrong Scott   ) is someone hearing that clip and dropping the cash and a week later the amp is in the emporium (I see this alot on TGP) because they thought they could purchase the entire package, skill/tone of the clip.

Some just don't want to invest the time to be the best that they can and want the gear to do it all for them, then seem puzzled at the end results.

That's where I was coming from when I agreed with Scott. Great players manage to sound great through pretty much any rig whereas a great rig can't save a lousy player. In this case, many players don't have what it takes to sound good on a an uneffected dimed Plexi....even though the fundamental tone may be great, it takes a certain amount of technique to capitalize on it.

I guess one could make the argument that part of the fun is learning how to play the amp- learning how to control that beast. Maybe (I've thought a lot about this) it's why there was so many great players that used essentially the same amp, and they all had signature styles/tones, in the late 60's/70's! It's like an open canvas! It's why I kind of harp on that point in the vid. The amp is so sensitive to input- your pedals, fingers, pick, pickups, everything. And It's why I say you don't have to just play Ed's licks- you can have a blast doing your own thing. And it magically doesn't sound like Ed anymore when you do (the tone at the top of the vid on "Perplexed" is the same tone I'm using with the gold strat!)

When you have an amp that has a shitload of gain in the front end and a master volume, all that character and individuality goes out the window, to a large degree.

So a big part of finding yourself as a player and creating something that's "you" could be in using a more pure rig, and learning how to make it work. Just an opinion...

It's the same thing I say about the Stratocaster. It can be a bitch to play but the rewards are great. So many masters play them and their voice and styles come through so well. Other guitars? Not so much. Jeff Beck has some great comments on this subject.

When I grow up I want to be like Pete Thorn. Then again, since I am 39 I guess I need a time machine to go back and start over again....

...

A lot of players in newer metal bands that use a lot of gain and detuned guitars......I have a hard time telling them apart.

It's like women and makeup.

A little makeup, applied tastefully, can make a nice looking woman more attractive and sexy...and you can still tell what she looks like underneath it.
But put on a ton of makeup and meh...they all look the same, like clowns...and what they look like underneath, that's anybody's guess.

Thank you guys.

With practice comes the tools to make the most out of any amp they are playing.

Sorry but I just hate " ..........can make any amp sound awesome......." That line is such bullshit. It takes years to get to that certain level where you can make almost anything work. If a GDEC with EJ playing it sounds awesome then yes the amp can be awesome in the right hands.

Do we really need to post the bogner uber vid again?  :D
