I turned 40 a few weeks ago and my parents have decided to gift me pretty much any guitar I want (THANKS MOM AND DAD ❤️❤️❤️). I’ve narrowed it down to either a Suhr Standard Custom, or a Sully Raven. That said, I’m having trouble deciding between the two.

I think the Suhr would get used more, but the Sully would be a full-on custom, built to my specs. That’s pretty cool TBH!

Fwiw, I own both a Rasmus Guthrie Govan (Suhr’s short-lived import brand) and a Sully Supernova (import). Both play incredibly well. And lately, I’ve been more into the modern super strat/ Gotoh 510 vibe. That aside, I’ve always been into Jackson/ Charvel guitars and Grover Jackson was Sully’s mentor. I’ve always wanted a Jackson custom shop and the Sully scratches that itch big-time!

There’s a Suhr dealer near me so I can play the guitars and the one that spoke to me most was the Standard Pro. I didn’t want to put it down. It was a Basswood/maple body, hss, gotoh 510 and if I ordered one, I’d do it in trans pink.

Sully is a whole other animal. Way more into the Jackson-ish Custom Shop side of things. How would you decide which one to get?

That's tough.
I think I'd go with the full custom if budget and timeline were not issues. I know Suhr gets a ton of respect and they're really popular, but that'd almost be a point in Sully's column for me cause of the uniqueness and rarity.

Maybe consider a Mayones? I love my pink Aquila. It’s just perfect

I think Suhr would take him into the deep waters then secure the submission (neck crank) in the 3rd round.

I think the wait for a custom Suhr is like 12-18 months currently so maybe ask Sully what his current build time is.

Wow 😯. I had no idea it was that long! Gosh danm. If that’s the case, I might be getting a Sully.

I got my Sully when all of his stuff was full on custom and before the Raven changed design.....I think mine may have been the last one.....total work of art! Spalted maple on mahogany and he even made the truss rod cover out of wood to match! Very Jackson feeling neck.

There are tons of great guitars out there both new and used. I'd try to find something that would work for you and go with that instead of waiting a year.

The guy who landed the plane in the Hudson makes guitars too?

That is not al all my usual style, but goddamn it fucks hard!

Jon Sully makes nice stuff. A year or less for a custom build is very reasonable considering. Also, great communication during the process. You will also get a real guitar case and not a gig bag with your build. The only guy who you would get that kind of attention from was Lee Garver. Unfortunately he’s not doing builds anymore. All the best on your journey.

I'm a bit befuddled at a 40 year old man receiving a gift like this from their parents.

Maybe late reply, but done it’s a one time thing and can get anything, I’d go with something custom that no one else has. Your specs, not a production or standard model.

I'd go for a Sully. Wouldn't even be a question for me. I follow Sully on Facebook and I see sick build after sick build. Do it!

I just ordered one of their imports. I'm not even sure if the dealer has it yet, but I'm so fuckin excited for my stupid pink sparkly pointy guitar.
