this is why my hero is Phil Keaggy.

I've had a live DVD of his for a couple of months that I haven't watched yet. I guess I need to pop it in. A good friend of mine (and great player) gave it to me and said that there are about five tunes on there that are amazing. I take it by your post that he's a humble, down-to-earth player? (THAT is what impresses me as I get older. The guys who are awesome, but don't get caught up in their own hype.)

saw him play at my church around 15 years ago. Approachable and friendly.

The point is that he has no class. Why not rip on BB King or Buddy Guy because they play three note solo's or Angus Young or SRV because of their limited knowledge of the fretboard?
It's ridiculous and it sounds like a grade schooler. Same as when Bonamassa bashed his contemporaries because he felt he wasn't getting enough attention.

Totally agreed.

Though I've certainly been guilty of taking shots at Kirk Hammett over the years. But I'm an anonymous internet poster and no one really gives a damn what I think. And Kirk is... well... Kirk.

I've heard that DiMeola's rug gets its own dressing room.

Only if EVH, Zakk or Vai have never set foot in it!

HA! I have always said the real guitfiddler in that group was Hetfield. He can keep up with Hammett while "singing" (screaming)

Could not agree more. I'm not a big Metallica fan, but my favorite album of theirs is probably the black album and James plays most/all of the good stuff on there. I always thought that they could have toured as a three-piece on that one and done fine.

[Re: Al being a bit of a douche in this article]

I agree, it's uncool for people to dis others - just hold yer own, and carry a conversation about YOUR side of the street, not others'. Taking jabs - no matter who you are - never reflects well on the jabber... It is what it is.

This being said, sure, there are a lot of BIG NAME guys out there that I don't believe are as good as their media rank or musical facade would otherwise indicate. But in these circumstances, I always always always think 'ya, but they're famous, they got to where they did, and they're known for what they do', and I, on the other hand, have none of that. Would I have wanted this? Who knows, a lot of the cats I have known have either ended their lives, ended their careers, or are washed up wannabes all over again. So life is just that, a big word with "IF" in the middle. But if one is so lucky to still have their head intact, their skill still shining through, and still able to afford a great lifestyle through doing something they truly love - there should be no reason to criticize others who have done the same.

Stay in your own movie...

Peace,
Mo

Fuck Al DiMeola. I guess he never heard "Spanish Fly"... Even Gilbert has trouble getting through that on nylon string...

Steve
Funny you brought that up. My freshman year in college I had a senior in my dorm who was a DiMeola disciple and an amazing guitarist. He turned me on the the stuff that Al did with McLaughlin and DeLucia and in turn I brought up Spanish Fly and Dee. He proceeded to berate me for listening to that "garbage" and went on to rip Eddie as a shit player and Randy as an amatuer. He was not a friend to me after that :D
Don't get me wrong either - Al DiMeola is an amazing guitar player and "Elegant Gypsy" was inspiring to me. I just think he sucks for ripping on people he personally doesn't have a taste for. That is dumb...

I admit it man... I'm a fan of The Darkness! I've got the balls to do that even though I know it's not cool to admit that on an internet forum. :D
You're not alone. I fucking love The Darkness and am unashamed of this fact. I saw them in San Diego when they came to America after "Permission to Land" came out and it was one of the best rock shows I've seen in years... Love that album too, although I think the followup was overproduced and disappointing - I use their tunes for gear demos all the time...

So Al shared his opinion and it let you down.

It was negative about others you thought highly of.

This thread is the same thing, sharing a negative.

Al only knows why he had that attitude at that moment.

He put out some great music. It stands on it's own.

Sometimes people just have a bad day.

So it's not cool to call 'em like you see 'em? Right or wrong, I'd rather have him be real than read another sanitized, politically correct interview...f**k that garbage. The pussification of society...I can't stand it.

Actually, you're right. I do like honestly.

But he dismissed some BIG time players as if they were mosquitos. THAT is the "garbage". Vai could do whatever he wanted to (plugged-in or otherwise). And EVH, though seemingly now irrelevant, sure as hell is one of the all-time biggest guitar influences there is. MILES more influential than Al will ever be (admittedly, because Eddie plays/played "popular" music).

At any rate... Al came off like a total douche to me in that article. I just called it as I saw it... ;)

Oh... and Al's talent and discography notwithstanding, there are guys out there who have played him into the weeds with less of an ego and more mature of an attitude. He came-off like a Yngwie's early interviews (when he was NINETEEN years old). Yngwie sounded like a bit of a douche when he did that, but a guy Al's age (you know... GRANDPA age) REALLY sounds douche-tastic when they're still talking smack at that age.

This happens on every guitar forum I see by 100 guys every single day....LOL....by the likes that dont have 1% the talent as Al D.....:D I think its more shocking to hear a professional musician do it though....

Pretty much what RedRider said... Sounds like 'ol Al would fit right in on Gear forums !

I thought it was well know that Al had a douchy streak in him!

But that nothing what he said. You guys should read an interview of the 2 guitar players from Blind Melon. They RIPPED, and I mean RIPPED Satriani and Dream Theater when they were commenting of a few songs while they were In The Listening Room for a Guitar World column. But they were kinda funny when they wished they could punch the guys from the Spin Doctors in the face for being so happy in the videos.

And yes, Yngwie as as brutal as anyone when he was younger.

Al's not well known to be a nice guy. Did a clinic here 15 or so ago, and treated the shop owner like he was his personal slave. Wouldnt even sign a shop poster for him.

Many famous guys are superb people, Vai included.

Bullshit - I've heard this crap from Al multiple times in interviews. Not an isolated case. He thinks he's the god of guitar and is jealous that others are more commercially successful who he deems lesser players. He's a douche nozzle...
