Swiss army amp?

Didn't you have an EVH 50?

I think that its strongest attribute is that you can plug straight into it (no pedals) and get a convincing tone for just about any genre. Besides the obvious rock/metal tones, I witnessed first hand a country band sounding great with one. 3 channels, good fx loop, usable eq, midi, and keeps its tone at low volume. I know there's tons of booteeky stuff and other "top shelf" brands that the "in" crowd uses but it's still difficult to beat for the price.

yeah I had an evh 50 once...great amp indeed...my tastes have changed and just looking for something a little different...this may sound stupid and it's a mental thing with me i guess...but when i see the big EVH logo i just seem to play only 80's rock/metal
I love that stuff don't get me wrong...but as i'm getting older I find myself wanting to play more cleans and mid gain stuff and just open to trying some amps i have never had.

Doesn't sound stupid at all. Inspiration comes from anything, the brand guitar or amp is no different I feel. In fact I'm in the same boat as you, for example, I just bought my first strat! And with no humbucker, imagine that lol. I've been playing through my early Marshall 2204 more and more the past year. With a few pedals I can get all kinds of tones. It's one of those amps that lets the tone of the guitar come through. Plug in a Benson, you get a great jazz tone. Plug in a superstrat with a bucker you get a great rock/metal tone.

H&K Grandmeister is cool, I love mine. The Triamp is still my vote.

Randall/ Egnater/ Synergy MTS amps

or a H&K Triamp MKIII

The most versatile amp I have owned was a Mesa Mark III. Clean to metal without requiring any dirt box or boost ( of course, YMMV ). So yeah, the Mark 5:25 is probably a great one to look at first.

I don't think one single amp exist myself that covers everything. Get you a Kemper or Axe-FX if you just want one device to be a swiss army of amps. Even a lot of modern multi ch amps only do one thing, maybe 2 things really well. I prefer multiple heads that do what they do on their own.

Well if down-sizing really means down-sizing, the Mark V:25. End of story. It has more than enough power to gig/jam, super versatile and small.

Have you ever played through a DuoTone? Excellent touch-sensitive clean channel and anything from cheap dirt to shred on the OD channel--built in boost. Highly recommend!

Soldano SLO or HR25 or Lucky 13

Both sound killer but actually I might give the nod to the HR25 because it has a more user-friendly effects loop.* I love the tones, versatility, and simplicity. SLO is not low wattage but it sounds amazing at any volume; I disagree with those who say it needs to be opened up to sound good. If I had to choose one amp would be these with the Lucky 13 a close second.

*apologies to Shark Diver

PWE Event Horizon 3 - Best sounding flexible amp in the market! And no I am not just saying that because I have one up for sale. I have 2 of Ted's amps and they roar!!!!

a true ulfberth sword i would say its gotta strength, class of its own, history, unrival technology and it cuts like no other it would be a Fryette/VHT pittbull ultra lead.... it cuts its bold its tight, clear on high gain, and its dynamic and versatile with the right pickup to yield sweet fat bloomy tones...
