Talk to me about Gibson quality

So I just got the new MF catalog and holy crap, my eyes spy the SG 61 reissue! I had an early 70's SG that I loved and I kick myself daily for selling it a long time ago; and available in white no less! WOW, wait...what? add 409 bones for the white? What the?

Anyways, I've heard some fairly negative things about Gibson build quality over the last few years; surely a guitar that is going to clock in at 2 grand shouldn't have those issues, right?

My finger is kind of close to the trigger but I'm still shy.

Observations?

quality varies big time with Gibson, IF you can try them I suggest you seriously do so....

Personally, I haven't seen a fraction of the shit that forumites claim to see on every guitar.

What I have noticed is that shops with good repair men have guitars with great setups that feel great to play, while shops with shitty repair men tend to have guitars with shitty setups that feel like shit to play.

I buy from the former and don't buy from the latter.

FWIW/YMMV

One problem with Gibsons are the damn humps in the necks.

That's why i sold my last one. I probably won't own another Les Paul since my Bulldog pisses on any LP I've ever played. :D

If you can't play it first, Don't buy it.

+1

"gibson" + "stay in tune" = are never put in the same sentence.

I own 8 gibsons and they are fine guitars, i like the sound and feel of them and honestly they are some of my favorite guitars i own, every company that makes as many guitars and gibson does will have some issues but that doesnt mean you have to be that guy who buys the guitar with the flaws. some people love them and some hate them but if you happen to like them you should look around and play a few and find the one that suits you.

they're doing better on QC, and have started to listen to the customers some.

they're Pleking, and coming out with some stuff that people atleast want and could use.

still would be best to cherry pick, but i'm not as scared to buy sight unseen anymore, and have ordered an Explorer.

Try before you buy. I've bought 3 Vos lp jr's in the past couple of years off the bay and they were all dog shit. The fretwork and the overlapping edges of the fingerboard actually made me laugh out of sheer disgust. My '80 silverburst custom lp is however a good piece.

I think they are getting better and I am no Gibson fan. I would definitely try before you buy. Many of the guitars in stores are not set up worth a damn and that goes for a lot of makers, not just Gibson. Pay attention to the frets and workmanship, not the set up. You can fix that at home.

I'm a big time fan of these instruments, but the people I get them from KNOW quality pieces, not the run of the mill. I have nothing but solid slab Lesters, no chambering, no weight relieving. Each one plays incredibly well, none of them have any defects, issues, or the like. I had one that required a set up, and now it plays incredibly well. Yes, I've swapped out pups in some of them, but that's primarily because I only need so many Classic 57s or BB1s and 2s. Know what I mean??

For shits and giggles, I've gone into music stores, pulled one of the shelf, played it, and disliked it - horrible set ups, typically. I've never come across one that has many of the issues people here complain about - my sources already know what to look for before calling me, and when they do? I just take 'em. None of my Lesters are cheapos though, they're all customs or reissues, none of the VOS bullshit, and always looked over by my tech. Funnily enough - the notion that "Les Paul" and "in tune" are never in the same equation... My '68 Firemist was always giving me grief, always falling out of tune, drove me nuts. Also had a dead string when bending, and some buzzing. Finally got it to my tech, it needed a set up - a big one, but it's now perfect. As for the tuning?? The nut needed to be opened up a bit - filed in a tad. That was it. My guy said "it happens all the time, older Lesters were used to 9s, some 10s, they never had a consistent cut at the nut". Sure as shit, this particular one holds tune for a good couple hours of shitkicking before I need to tweak it again - and that's only from string fatigue generally, not the guitar's fault.

Just saying.

did you also email them about the reverse flying V

Gibson makes great guitars .... sometimes. Just like every other decent builder in the world. Most guitars are crap .... regardless of the builder in my opinion.

Problems with Gibson's staying in tune ? I have been playing them and owning them for over 30 years. Hundreds of them .... very few had tuning problems. Much less on the average than most builds.

The only newer Gibson I own is an 07 Flying V, although a fine guitar, my 84 Carvin Ultra V puts it to shame in every way imaginable. A friend of mine got a new LP Traditional the same week that I got my Agile 3100. Lets just say that he no longer has his Gibson and my Agile is going nowhere. In the same respect I love my older Gibsons.
