On our first lesson he asked me what I wanted to learn more about. I told him I tried the whole scales thing and it was too complex and boring. But what he did was make me want to learn how to do scales and now I have 7 memorized, which is 7 more than I ever expected

What I didn't realize is that you can mix the modes into any key so that helped me realize the benefit in a way that seemed more practical as opposed to just learning scales for the sake of learning scales.

I'm 2 months in on my lessons from @Techdeth and I can already tell I am making a lot of improvements. He has a great way of identifying what you need to learn to help you connect with the next level. Initially, I was apprehensive that I had played by ear so long, that I couldn't possibly learn the theory. Techdeath makes it easy and he finds the songs and licks that interest you. Lessons are always fun also. If I can make progress after 35 years of winging it and memorization, anyone can.
