Telefunken 12ax7 new production.

It’s even funnier when IMO JJ’s have the gain structure of wet cardboard. Instant spilled beer on speaker cabinet tone.
I was joking around. I don't know about high gain circuits, but my Reeves and Hiwatt both came with JJ's stock, and there was no wet cardboard to be found. Both amps sounded amazing from the moment I got them.

That said, now they're loaded with NOS Telefunken and Mullard ECC83's, with NOS Mullard EL34's in the Hiwatt, and I still have JJ E34L's in the Reeves.

Those ECC83S high gain models are the worst for it. Sonically it’s an unorganized gain sound they have that just sounds like wet cardboard rattling. I think designers have to design around the tube to utilize it to its fullest potential. I just can’t stand them at all.
