Tell Me About the Latest Splawn Quickrods...

Ive owned multiple Splawns and had the luxury of trying out Scott's B+ amp at his shop.
If you have a chance to get the B+ option do it it is worth it.
It adds the Liquid lead ability to the Quick Rod. Makes the amp less stiff and really easy to play unlike the typical Splawn which is (and remember Im a big fan) a lil on the stiff side. I don't think the sound changes much but the feel has improved so much with his latest version.

you can't go wrong with any splawn you choose. I have an 09/10 quick rod and a 2010 street rod. I love them both. I really want to check a b+ quick rod out! I use a tubescreamer with mine to grease it up a little bit and works like i charm! Other boosts i have tried with it also sound killer (OCD, SD1, and GE-7). The amp is so punchy and rude i love it!!! Here is a clip of the amp boosted its pretty shit quality, and the playing isnt great either. Sorry for butchering many of our favorite riffs:

This is all great info; many thanks to you all.

I'm leaning toward the QR B+ or the Pro Stock B+. Many thanks, guys! ...Also still looking at Surreal amps. Jerry's been a great help. I want to give him a shout for that. ...But the Splawn's been on my list for years. I'm playing one at GC here in Dallas tomorrow, but it's not a B+.

What did you like about it so much and why did it have you second guessing your Nitro? How would you describe it?

Ive never had the chance to play a B+, but sometimes I like to hit the front end of my 2007 Quickrod with a very mild compression. I usually keep my gain low, around 10 or 11 o'clock in Gear 2/OD1. It smooths it out and gives it a nice liquidy feel!

I put some clips up of my just recently traded 012 QR (no B+) and I have to tell ya. Stiff is not how I would describe that head. What I will say, it is the most diverse head when it comes to running different PUPs, od's, eq's and what have you. This is a really good thing! To note, I did go on a tour one day to several music stores with the head and tried a ton of different cabs. At the end of the day the Splawn 4x12 with the 55 watt small blocks was truly the perfect match. Good luck in your search!

well it is way way more versatile for starters.
I was really digging the mid grind on the new Qr and it has a shit ton of usable gain. I am a heavy player and I was at home using gear 1. cool amp it seems more forgiving than the latest nitro too either that I was having a very good day.

Gear 1 & 2 are plenty mean enough. Rolling back the volume works well on these amps. Mine is the B+ also. Can't recommend it enough.

The B+ definitely ""feels" less stiff. Its still a QR. i guarantee you cannot tell them apart by listening to them. The feel of the B+ is just less stiff.

Damn it now I want to play a QR.

I have a 2012 Nitro. I also had a 2008. They sounded very similar but the 12 is noticeably more saturated and has more gain. But again in a band mix as a listener you could not tell them apart.

Missing the QR eh?

Some days. I basically am gigging the EVH 50 watt and the QR would never have gotten use. The stiffness was hard to deal with when I started having to learn Vivian Campbell and Warren Demartini solos in my current gig.

Im a big Splawn fanboi though. I think I could see a 22 watter in my future. Something more useable in the clubs I play.

Can't tell you anything about the B+ version (it's my understanding that it's a plate voltage drop), but I own an '05 and '12 QR and both are great. I play the same stuff you do- hard rock/classic metal covers. FWIW, the '05 is my #1. The newer versions have a few features and options that the older ones don't, but my '12 is slightly darker with a touch more saturation & sag. Not in a bad way, but my preference is a tighter, punchier sound. Especially for old school stuff. Either way, you can't go wrong with a Splawn.

I loved the older Quickrod I had, but the newer ones I've played seemed to lack everything that made me love the original; over saturated, dark, and generic, as far as I'm concerned. YMMV.
