I don't think he was saying down-picking is superior. It's all subjective anyway. I think he was just saying that if you can play fast and clear with nothing but down-picking then that is awesome. Hetfield doing it is super awesome to me. That said, I think you would agree that the timbre of the note played is going to be slightly different coming down on the string vs up. I prefer alt myself. Alt picking that is.
Yeah, there's certain applications like Master Of Puppets for example where downpicking makes the song sound heavier and tighter - a lot of thrash songs that comes into play and MoP for one will sound odd if not downpicked through most of the riffs and Hetfield's definitely a master of that (no pun intended).I don't think he was saying down-picking is superior.
