The only Heavy DEVY I have heard was Strapping young Lad.
I had the CITY CD and another one.......

it was mediocre at best............. :(
Oh come on Danno. Brutal tunes bro. this video/song is as metal as it gets!!!! Note the Evil Dead intro.

I concur: That`s one awesome song! I dig the tone, songwriting and even like his vocals on this one! 10/10. I also love how this thread partially turned into a "you got to like Devin" Mission   But yes: He is awesome! As is Alter Bridge, but I agree with Digi: It`s awesome for a while, then gets dull, and after a break of about three months sounds great again (except the "filler" songs that often happen to be on these albums, but hey: no need to buy them with MP3!). Rock on fellas, lot`s of great music out there that gives us reason to talk

Wow thats a blast from the past. We were on a bill with Strapping Young Lad and Testament was the headliner. The singer jumped in the crowd and beat the daylights out of a guy, cops showed up, show over. We never played and Testament never did either. Cops shut the whole thing down. Upside was me and the other guitar player in my band got to hang with Chuck Billy for a while and burned one behind the bus.
Whats the relationship between Strapping Young lad and Devin Townsend?

Devin is SYL. Songwriter/Guitarist/vocalist.

The AB stuff is ok...no better or worse than a lot of others IMO.

I can appreciate Devin's work but the majority of his music just doesn't resonate with me...especially his vocal style. There are a few things that I like but I can't get on board with a lot of it. It frequently seems to me like he's trying too hard to be clever...YMMV.

Sounds good! And I like this much better than anything I`ve ever heard from Devin Towsnend.

I'm not a big AB fan but I'd rather listen to marathons of their albums then Devin Townsend :bleh: I don't get the love afair that some people around here have with that guy

I dont get it either. I bought one of DT's albums and was waiting to bet blown away. I didnt even feel a simple breeze
I have to pass on him myself. Not that I didnt try to listen. I gave it several chances.....various CD's....
.........meh.

But to each their own. ;)

i hate to admit it cuz im such a metal purist but stone sour is a good band....i think Corey is an amazing vocalist, and he has so much more to offer besides the screaming he does in shitknot, that band is sooo gay if your not 9 years old

and while everyone in dream theatre is extremely talented i just think none of them can write a good song if their life depended on it, Train of Thought was their best CD....i hate it when they bust out those stupid keyboard solos, most of the times it totally kills the songs

honestly though TOOL gets my vote, their easily the best band to come out with an original sound in a long time. they are just an awesome band and i think every CD they put out was just epic. i think their music is easily appealing and listenable to all people , and their live shows are completely captivating.

as far as metal goes, mastodon is the best band out right now with an original sound, and all the other good non copycat bands only come from either gothenburg Sweden, or Finland...

These are probably my favorites at the moment: Tool, Alice in Chains, Deftones and Stone Sour.

for rock-n-roll i like viking skull. seems like modern rock to me.

Wow. Late to the party on finally listening to the AB song. I was not expecting that. I thought it was good very good.

Best band in rock? It's all opinion...I'm really liking Wilco right now but I guess it's not really rock. Try and play along with a Nels Cline solo; you'll be lost in about 2 beats. Does Iron Maiden still count as a rock band? Shame how they are totally ignored here on American radio. HOw bout king's x??

I know this is not HC, but flame suit on. I am a big Trivium fan. They get a lot of hate, but I think that they have a very good balance of really heavy, and good sone writing.

Anthem

Pull Harder on the strings of your Martyr

Entrance of the Conflagration

Here's a few tunes by Katatonia. Good band. A bit gothy but I like the mix of mellow and heavy in their songs. Their drummer is good too..real good, and I'm not a drum guy. Anyway, it's a band worth checking out if you're looking for something new.

i love trivium they had two shitty albums but their latest one shogun was totaly solid. i wouldnt say their the best band out but their deff quality newish type american metal

i still think sweden, finland and norway have better metal bands than any of the american bands now-a-days......check out blinded colony their from finland and their pretty amazing

I actually think that their first album Ember to Inferno was their best followed by the Crusade. I put Shogun, and Ascendancy both near the bottom. I just don't like the tones on Shogun for most songs. That said I think that the song Shogun is a masterpiece

I will check out blinded colony

Also to the OP, Alterbridge rocks!!!! Creed's first album came out around the time I started playing, and I have been a bit of a fanboy since then. I even covered whats this life for in my first band. But Scott Stapp is a douche. I was in Baltimore around thanksgiving a few years back, and they were interviewing the guys from 311 about a bar fight they were in, and basically Stapp was being a JA, and one of the guys from 311 beat him down  From what I remember Stapp said something to the guys wife, and that was it :uzi:

yea i wasnt a huge fan of ember to inferno or the crusade, im not a huge trivium fan but i do like them, ascendancy was the album that got me into the band back when it came out....

im not a real big fan of any of their tones on the cds but i like their song arrangements/structures.......

if i had to choose an american band for their tone it would be unearth no question, they got some brutal thick crushing distortion that would set trivium on fire lol

I dig AB, new song sounds cool...looking forward to new album.
I like aspects of all Devin's projects, I just can't get into any of them as a whole.

I think Karnivool is the best newer band out there. They capture my full attention. I've seen them live twice and they just deliver. I like that their singer has some dynamics. There's a few other bands that I dig music but singer bores me to tears(Porcupine Tree, Katatonia seems that way).

They won't be heavy enough for most people here but:
