We do have something here called NPR, which very much leans political left and panders to it's leftist supporters, while the people leaning right don't care for it and don't think their taxes should be paying for it.

There’s an argument to be made that because gov backed news doesn’t answer to advertisers for example, then they can be more free to report. But that obviously precludes critical coverage of the government itself.

As for usefulness, it’s kind of a personal matter. I think a lot of people are just looking for support of their preconceived beliefs and ideas, thus getting “use” from news sources that only do that.
