Just to chime in:
I have had such a struggle finding musicians with a real drive. At most, they will really enjoy the jams and warmups or tracks we play and will love what we lay down while 'jamming'. This is a warmup for real musical ideas to be imprinted, not a final song.
I am so fucking sick of guys enjoying some random noodling I'm doing and being like "We got it, let's record, it's great!" No it isn't idiot, it's a guy noodling on guitar over some progressions. Let's get these tracks stuck to a process and professional level and then record them....
Had 2 bass players with a lot of talent. One was more vintage vibe and older and the other was a bit younger but a very killer player.
Vintage guy- why do we need to practice? We can do it like jazz.
OK guy, I've performed around for years with Jazz ensembles and we always practiced our music and knew where solo breaks would land, for how long, etc. If you say - just wing it like jazz, you don't know much about jazz at all or being a true musician and performer. He liked to drink a six pack ever practice so he could conveniently forget everything we went over or talked about as a band.
Damn dude, I'm the one playing guitar rhythm, lead and singing, is it that fucking hard???
Drummer and I had a meeting and had to basically let him know to get with it or get moving, he said he wasn't in a band to 'Play structured music' and was just doing it for fun... Tho we had gigged out and it was clearly a professional project.
Bassist #2: Unreliable, flakey dude who was also whiney. Only lived 15m from my place and would never let me give him a ride though that was always his excuse when he would No Show to a gig or practice. 'No gas man.' Or some stupid bull like that. Talented guy who will always live at home with that mentality.
The drummer? Killer guy, killer drummer, super into the band, we jive together EVERY SINGLE TIME. Problem? He is a lead enforcer for a biker gang. The more he chose that life, the more I distanced myself.
When I showed up at an open jam and was made to wait for 4 hours with an uncomfortable setting, I was super confused. I was then made aware we were in 'Rival' territory and he had backup on the way.
Nah, I don't do music to get into fights bro.
So, no bassist X 2 - (I've been playing since I was 13, so I can lay all of my own parts)
No drummer, gotta go digital.
